Great, authentic Ethiopian

Super friendly staff and very helpful to our group of nine that came in for dinner. Instead of platters, they made up a little buffet for us to share and eat. The food was delicious- a nice combo of flavourful and spicy and very generous with the portions. It was a fun experience.

Pros: Flexible staff, Tasty food, Traditional

Cons: Dated setup

Solid but nothing special

Some great food, some not so great. Sort of an awkward place to dine.

Pros: Vegan platter

Cons: Some platter items were weak, Not a super comfortable dining experience

Authentic Ethiopian food

I love the food here. The injera is fresh and the different stews are absolutely delicious. What the restaurant lacks in interior design, it makes up for in flavour. The management is a bit disorganized but the owners are very friendly and often come by to chat.

Pros: Authentic, Delicious

Cons: Slow service, Lackluster interior

Decent food, great service

I went during the lunch hour and was the only customer in the restaurant. I don’t think the lunch buffet happens anymore (there was no buffet when I was there and the buffet looked like it hadn’t been used in a while). The proprietor of the restaurant is really friendly and happy to chat. She quickly whipped me up a vegan platter that was very good, but not as well spiced as platters I’ve had at other Ethiopian restaurants. The proprietor knows about veganism and will make sure your food is vegan. The restaurant itself has a nice ambiance and I thought it was clean enough for a restaurant. My platter for one, which was very filling, was $18.

Pros: Large servings, Vegan options labelled on the menu

Would never go back

The place is falling apart. Dirty washrooms. The music switched between a tv show and loud and soft tradition Ethiopian music. The meals was very cheap but I heard the microwave warming it up for me. Would never ever go back!

Oh my gosh

Absolutely amazing. No, really. I was blown away. I ended up tipping 50% because the service was incredible, the food delicious and the environment amazing. My entire family (6 of us) were all fed for $55.

Pros: delicous, amazing service, live music!

Cons: nothing whatsoever

Best food in the city

Selam is my favorite restaurant in the city. SO GOOD! The veggie platter is all vegan, and the buffet has their best vegan dishes out for all you can eat for $9. Buffet is from 11:30-2 Tuesday-Friday. Closed from 2-5 weekdays, open at 5 Saturday and Sunday, closed Mondays. Service can be a bit slow sometimes, and occasionally they open late, but don't let it deter you. The food is worth the wait!

Pros: delicious, nutritious

Great Vegan Food

I have confirmed on two separate occasions that the Vegetarian Combo Platter offered by Selam is vegan. I made sure to specify no meat, eggs, or dairy, and I was assured that only vegetable oils are used for cooking the vegetable dishes.
Ethiopian food is amazing. This is by far my favourite restaurant in the city, and my omni-husband loves the food as well. We get a Veggie combo platter to share, because it's too much food for one person. It comes with injera and several small portions of the various veggie dishes: a wat made from yellow split peas, two lentil wats (one is spicier), a lettuce salad with an oil/spice dressing, a potato and cabbage wat, and a green bean and carrot wat.Be sure to try the Ethiopian Coffee as well (but you'll have to drink it black or bring your own non-dairy creamer if you're vegan).

Pros: excellent food, good value, authentic

Cons: older decor
