Veggie restaurant set in an old school building. Food is made with mostly local, seasonal, and organic produce. Typically 2 weekly menus - one 'Hagedis' menu, and a more luxurious menu, in addition to a la carte. Child friendly. Could bring your own boxes or plates for a takeaway meal. Three times experience at Restaurant Hagedis

2 Posted on 09 / 23 / 2013

I have been there three times, but was not very much impressed by the food. The Indian dish was spiced too much with ginger and the desserts I had were not very tasty. There are too less options in desserts for vegans. Maybe I was unlucky with the person who prepared the Indian dish and the desserts. Service is not very special.

Always a good experience

I've been to de Hagedis many times, and have always had positive experiences. Nowadays they work with 2 weekly changing menus, with only the (cashew) fondue on the standard menu. 1 of the weekly menus is vegan and gluten free, for those who need that. They make wonderful desserts and the food is built up of creative, tasty combinations. So far the best vegetarian restaurant in town for diner!

(The prices are definitely not inexpensive though...)

Pros: Weekly changing menu, Clearly labeled vegan options, Lovely desserts
Cons: A bit pricy

Fantastic!

The restaurant clearly listened to the feedback of being slow cause the food came out fast and furious for us (almost too fast! But honestly the service was top notch). We thoroughly enjoyed three course meal. The food was truly excellent and at 15 euros, we found it to be quite a good deal as well. I would highly recommend this restaurant!

Pros: Tasty & creative, Great atmosphere, Friendly and attentive staff

good but expensive

3 Posted on 12 / 20 / 2011

most NL restaurants are very expensive and this is not an exception. HOwever the place is absolutely beautiful and both times I went the food was excellent. Just avoid the starters with humous: they were ridicolously small amounts for the price we paid. The cashew fondue is a genious invention if you are vegan, but you must like the cashew nuts - very tasty. The people working there are very friendly and they tend to eat at the table beside you at late hours, which is nice... I liked it. Pity it is far from the centre.

Pros: good food, nice environment, professional
Cons: price!!!, price!!!

A must while in the Hague

5 Posted on 07 / 04 / 2011

This is a fairly busy restaurant, so you may want to try to make reservations (they seemed unimpressed when we showed up without them, but we were still seated). Also, the service was very slow, but once you have a glass of wine you won't mind the wait (the building is beautiful).
They have a well-marked English menu where vegan options are marked with a "V", making it easy to order. We couldn't pass up the opportunity to have the cashew "cheese" fondue, which was very good and fun to eat! It came with a lovely selection of breads and roasted vegetables for dipping. We also ate a rhubarb tart which was excellent.
A great place for kids, we were travelling with our baby and they have a little room full of toys where he could play to make the long wait for food easier.

Pros: vegan options, healthy food, large portions
Cons: busy, slow service

a special place

4 Posted on 08 / 26 / 2009

As stated in the previous review, the restaurant setting is special, with a lot of character.

Had some trouble deciding between the two daily specials, since they were both appealing. In the end, we were happy with our choices. Both the food and service were good.

Also nice was the diversity of clientele--families with small children, tourists, hippies.

Pros: architecture & decor, decaf & "bambu" coffee
Cons: no alcohol-free fondue

Wonderful dinner

4 Posted on 12 / 03 / 2007

The staff were kind but not very alert. We were early but still had to wait quite some time before we could order. This gave us ample time too look at the beautiful interior with the original tiling and woodwork. A recurring theme in the decoration are lizards; "hagedis" is Dutch for lizard. The name is probably also wordplay on "The Hague" and "dish".
The menu mainly offers a choice of several pasta dishes, cheese fondues and both a dish and a special for the day. There are several vegan options too. For drinks the most common alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are available. We took pumpkin/curry soup and farmers' bread for starters, which we enjoyed very much. We continued with the special, a filled zucchini with fried potatoes and carrots, joined by a fresh salad. The parts as well as the combination proved to be delicious. For dessert we split: apple cake and chocolate cake; both were served with some icecream and tasted great: rich but not overpowering. In all we had a wonderful dinner and we will most certainly return.

Pros: tasty food, beautiful location
