Great place to stay or eat, in a lovely location

5 Posted on 02 / 15 / 2012

We've just stayed a night at Michael House, and it's great for vegans. All the choices for evening meail are vegan, and a vegan breakfast just means not asking for an egg - we really enjoyed both meals.

The owners are very friendly and helpful, and with advance notice can also provide just an evening meal for those not staying with them. They are licensed, and with a choice of vegan wines and beers what more could you want!

The house and our room were comfortable and well looked-after, with good taste obvious in the decoration, furnishings, and art works. The ethical approach is consistent, with vegan soaps and toiletries also provided.

The location is also wonderful, in a small village in North Cornwall. Trebarwith Strand is a pleasant and easy 15 minutes walk away - a lovely beach which is quite sizeable at low tide and with stunning cliffs to each side.

We recommend it for a stay or for a meal, whether or not you are vegan.

Pros: Good food, Lovely location, Friendly owners

Warm welcome and fantastic vegan food

We stayed at Michael House for 3 nights and received a very warm welcome from Vanessa and Simon - and later from their dogs and cats too! Convenient location for visiting Tintagel or walking the SW Coast Path - they have maps you can borrow. Room was spacious, clean and comfortable with a large private bathroom and great views over fields towards Trebarwith Strand and the sea. Breakfast was excellent with fresh fruit, cereals, soya yoghurt, home made bread, fruit juice, choice of hot drinks and "The Full Michael" - a cooked vegan breakfast consisting of sausage, beans, mushrooms, tomato, scrambled tofu and rosti. The evening meals were outstanding in taste and presentation and would not look out of a place in a top restaurant. Sometimes we chose what we wanted and sometimes we opted for a surprise. Vanessa was very helpful and couldn't have been a better host.

Wonderful food, hosts, and surroundings

Our family of 4, 3 Veggies, 1 Vegan, had a wonderful time with Vanessa, Simon, and their 3 doggies as hosts. We selected this location based on location, combined with a focused vegetarian menu. Michael house is a very warm, homey place, furnished with a mixture of antiques and African pieces, and very vegetarian focused. Our rooms were very comfy. We had two rooms, across the hall from one another, each facing the ocean. Each room had a tea setting for in-room tea and ginger biscuits, as well as vegan soap in the bath. Vanessa kindly served us tea after a long train ride from London and car ride from Bodmin, which she offers. Food was excellent. We had 3 breakfasts and 2 dinners. Each morning offers a similar choice of fresh baked break, muesli, and vegan or vegetarian offerings - plenty to choose from. Evenings you work with Vanessa to find items from her suggested menu that work for all guests. One night we dined with other guests, another night we dined ourselves, and another we dined out. Dinners were outstanding and we found ourselves quite satisfied. She is a very good cook.
Perhaps the highlight for us is the proximity of Michael House to Trebarwith Strand and the Cornwall Coastal Walk. We brought no automobile, but instead took to walking every day across cliffs to Tintagel, and enjoying the breeze and sun. As our first introduction to Cornwall, it was a fantastic stay all around. Oh, and if you love dogs, you have a bonus.

Pros: Comfortable and Warm, Proximity to beach and walk, Views
Cons: Best to have a car with you

Really great B&B

We stayed at Michael House in June for a 3 day break. We enjoyed ourselves so much we decided to stay on another night. Michael House exceeded our expectations - it is a really comfortable house. Vanessa and Simon are very welcoming but not intrusive. We had a lovely room with wonderful views across the hills and out to sea - the room was spacious and had a sitting area in front of the window so we could enjoy the view. The breakfast really is good - homemade muesli, homemade bread etc and then a very comprehensive cooked Vegan or Vegetarian breakfast. We chose to have dinner all four nights and were treated to the most delicious meals - real value for money - we also came away with some recipes to try once we got home. We planned on doing some walking around the area - the Coast Path is spectacular. We also walked on Bodmin Moor. Vanessa provided a packed lunches which meant we did not have spend time searching around for somewhere to get something to eat at lunchtime. We are already thinking abut another visit in September and are toying with the idea of a stay at Christmas too. I would definitely recommend Michael House.

Pros: Spacious comfortable room, Great Views, Fabulous Vegan or Vegetarian Food
Cons: I cant think of any really

Delicious food and very friendly atmosphere

We spent at Michael's house Easter weekend and it was amazing. Both Vanessa and Simon are very friendly and they are excellent cooks. They make fresh bread every morning and mousli is fresh too. I've never eaten better one.
Vanessa can adjust any recipe to vegan. She gave us even vegan eggs for Easter.
We had one evening meal. The meal was fantastic (thai carry) and the settings very romantic.
I would really recommend both staying at the guest house and the meals.

Pros: Very delicious food, friendly atmosphere, flexible for vegans
Cons: I can't think of any

Gorgeous food, fab views, lovely owners!

We just spent a long weekend at Michael House & loved it. The owners Vanessa & Simon are great hosts, the food is brilliant & the house itself is a relaxing & beautiful space. Prices are very reasonable too. Vegans are very well catered for & there is the option of a full cooked breakfast every morning if you would like one. You can choose from Linda McCartney sausage, Potato rosti, Beans, Tomato, Mushrooms, and for non-vegans fried halloumi & eggs any style you like, plus toast, cereals etc!
You would think after such a breakfast you wouldn't be hungry again that day but it's amazing what a long coastal walk does for the appetite! We enjoyed 2 evening meals at Michael House & enjoyed delights such as Coconut & Carrot soup, Seared Tofu with fresh local vegetables & Chocolate Torte!
Don't expect to go home slimmer than you left, but I can't recommend this place highly enough! (The wine is great too!)

Pros: excellent food, reasonably priced, gorgeous views & location
Cons: not close enough to where i live!
