Great Veg/Vegan Cafe in the Heart of Cowtown!

5 Posted on 01 / 26 / 2014

Mario Lorenzo is a brave man, opening a veg restaurant in the heart of Humboldt County's cow country. The cafe was originally vegan, but business was poor, so in order to survive, Mario began including some dairy and egg options. In the majority of his dishes, the dairy is just a light garnish that can be omitted for vegans. That Mario is a passionate cook, shows in everything he serves. The food is interesting, diverse, and always delicious. Mario is especially renowned for his soups, house salad dressing, fresh-baked breads, and pastries. Everything on the menu is very reasonably priced, including the fabulous five-course evening meal that is served the third Wednesday of each month for just $17 (limited seating, reservations required, and spaces fill fast so call well before the date). The cafe is casual and friendly, with indoor and patio dining.

Charming little place

5 Posted on 06 / 10 / 2013

Lost Coast cafe is located in the beautifully old-fashioned Ferndale. We found it to be very different from the rest of the town and its surroundings (in a good way). Here you'll find fresh and delicious toasted sandwiches, hearty and warming soups and lovely bread and sweets baked daily on the premises. With a small enough menu to keep it simple but extensive enough to have plenty of choice, this charming cafe has it all. The owner was happy to accommodate to our needs and knew every single ingredient in the dishes. Relaxed and low-key, it felt like going to a friend's house for dinner.
