Vegan-friendly
Chinese
Thai
Small restaurant with view to the ancient city wall. Has limited amount of pre-cooked Thai and Chinese food which are mostly vegan. Opening time is flexible--if it looks closed but some one responses, just ask. Owner speaks little English. Open hours vary.

Sometimes a smile is all the necessary communication. Mockmeat-rice-dish was tasty, very good value for money.

Simple & friendly - Edit
Basic, simple Thai food. Very friendly owner does not speak English but at the word “je” will produce a lovely vegan lunch. A family of well looked-after cats adds to the friendliness. #Veganuary

A Chiang Saen Institution and the Only Option You'll Need - Edit
Walking towards this place in a residential area with the old city wall right across the street, I was fairly sure it’d be closed, but luckily Mae has been at this for 16 years and isn’t about to stop. I was only in Chiang Saen, definitely a big enough city to have more than one vegan restaurant, for two days and made sure to have both of my lunches here. Also rode past once after dark, and it still looked open.
Read moreAs there was little or nothing on display and a small whiteboard in Thai as a menu, it’s best to say you’ll eat whatever there is. She serves up pretty simple fare with cabbage and mock meats prominently featured, and a filling, healthy meal plus a wide selection of snacks never cost more than 40 Baht. Small cucumbers can be dipped in a spicy side sauce with any meal. She’s a very patient, mothering, and inquisitive lady who’ll say your Thai’s good if you can string a couple of sentences together. On Saturday her place even became a social gathering spot, making for great listening and speaking practice, though difficult social distancing in a small place between elders.
You can sit facing the wall and watch local squirrels have a meal of fruit that the owner may replenish. Even if the city had other choices, a vegan in Chiang Saen would be amiss not to try her cooking and company at least once.
Pros: Very friendly, healthy, and cheap
Cons: English won't go far

Really loved this place. The couple were very welcoming and were showing me the dishes they had on offer. The food was nice and only 30THB for 3x dishes. Also a great point to kick off from to check out all the Buddhist temple ruins dotted around the city.

Cheap, simple and lovely - Edit
The owner (?) spoke hardly English, but was very friendly and served us several dishes with rice. The food was cold (as it seems to be common in jay eateries like this one) and we could not choose from the menu or a buffet, which can be a serious problem if you need to avoid certain ingredients. However, everything we got served tasted good and it was a lovely experience to eat in such an authentic little restaurant.

Lovely people, food is nice as well. Only a few dishes but taste is good. Not much English spoken, but good people. Do not need many words to explain, just point and eat.

Amazing little place - Edit
A small, family run vegetarian restaurant. Use the map, and it's easy to find. When we showed up they were pretty much closed as they were almost out of food, but they served us up delicious vegan food with brown rice. Two different mains, which were almost like stew. They were delicious. If they ask if you want spicy, say yes as they give you a small dish of a fresh salsa-like sauce to add as you please. We even got a refill of one stew as we were hungry, and it was tasty. Two of us are for 80 B ($2.70US). A real 'locals-only' place.
