Cozy & Delish

Posted on 03 / 07 / 2015

What a great little gem! It was worth the wait for their vegan breakfast plates. We just put our name down and walked elsewhere to get our cup of joe, then by the time we got back we were seated. We got the French toast plate and the vegan spuds. YUM! The tofu scramble was one of the best I've had so far! Crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. I like the eclectic atmosphere , funky art, and mismatched coffee cups.

Pros: Cozy, Tasty, Organic
Cons: No Outdoor Seating

Great place for breakfast

Posted on 07 / 04 / 2014

An excellent place to grab some breakfast/brunch, this place had a huge menu with a very wide range of veggie and vegan options - to be honest, you'd have to search a bit to find the non-veggie items. If you're looking for something eggy and cheesy (and I was), Junior's is a great option. They also played The Smiths the entire time we were there, which is always going to win my approval.

TREATED HORRIBLY - Will never go back!
My wife and I decided to grab breakfast here
while our boys were practicing for a flag folding
ceremony for a Memorial Day service at church.
When we were finally seated, and after we had placed
our order, the "music" shifted from a low key Willie
Nelson mix to a high volume combination of
slurred talking over loud noisey instruments
It was difficult to even talk or think over.
Now I have a high tolerance of most things, but this was
over the top. We even asked the people next to us what
they thought of it, and they weren't happy about it either.
My wife found someone on staff before I did to
request that it either be changed or turned down.
Now, my Bride is respectful, considerate, and kind -
and at the same time articulate enough to communicate
what she wants to say. She also has a degree in restaurant
management, among other things and ran one of the
top restaurants in Portland in her younger days.

So I was surprised when she came back and said
that they weren't willing to change the music
or turn it down. After a few more minutes,
we decided to eat at the outside table.
No sense letting good food go to waste :)
We took our food to the outside table
where it was quieter & made the best of it.

OK, so here is where, had I not seen it with
my own 2 eyes and heard it with my own
2 ears, I would not have believed it.
I swear, I wondered when the camera crew
was going to come out and say “SURPRISE!”
and that we were on some sort of prank show.

One of the staff, who I later discovered was the
owner, came out with ‘To Go’ boxes and our bill
telling us we couldn’t have food outside.
And after trying to tell her that we came outside
because we couldn’t be inside with that “music”,
she proceeded to tell my Wife that she was
being dramatic and immature and that
clearly this wasn’t her kind of place.
Seriously – this is where I thought cameramen
would be coming out any second from hiding.
Not only was THE OWNER publicly berating us
in front of other customers, but the only
drama and immaturity was from her.
We were completely calm throughout our visit -
and you could ask anyone there & they’d agree.
After our scolding, another couple came out and they,
too had mentioned that they didn’t care for the “music”,
and they were told they were welcome to not come back.
Seriously! It was humiliating, insulting, embarrassing,
and the owner of the restaurant should be ashamed.
Do yourself a HUGE favor and stay away!

Pros: Good portions
Cons: Unprofessional, Rude treatment, Loud inappropriate music

Good Portland breakfast spot

Posted on 11 / 01 / 2013

Junior's Cafe is like that sweet beaded old cardigan that feels classy and comfy at the same time. I love that Junior's is small enough that it feels like a big city spot, and also friendly enough that it feels like a small town place. I really appreciate the crispy edges on the tofu chunks (chunks, not mash!) in the scrambles, and the potatoes are well seasoned. I love the fresh smell of shampoo coming off the other customers, old and young alike (I did mention it is a small). I hope that Junior's Cafe will be around a long, long time, just like my favorite old sweater.

Pros: You can't not smile when you're here
Cons: Can get busy

Great Breakfast

Posted on 09 / 08 / 2013

Was really glad to have stopped here for breakfast while in Portland. The menu has plenty of vegetarian and vegan items, all clearly identified. Indications are also made where substitutions are possible - wait staff and chef are very accommodating.

While people rave about their potatoes with tofu sauce, we didn't have them. Not with the sauce, anyway. The potatoes themselves were quite good.

I very much enjoyed my vegan french toast meal with tofu scramble and vegan sausage. My wife had the 'greek spudz' which was also very tasty.

It's a quaint, unique little cafe that is quintessentially Portland. They make a mean breakfast at a reasonable price!

Pros: Menu very clear with many options, Portland vibe, Good food at reasonable prices

Cafe for everyone from vegan to carnivore

Posted on 09 / 08 / 2013

We were excited to visit Junior’s because of the positive online reviews, and we were not disappointed. We stopped in for lunch on a Friday morning and found them relatively busy. We were quickly seated and attended to by the most pleasant and happy server. She was upbeat during our entire visit and was a big part of making our visit enjoyable. The food was great! I had the vegan French toast breakfast, which was delicious. The French toast melted in my mouth. The fresh-squeezed orange juice was also delicious. My husband enjoyed a dish called The Prince, which featured tofu and Italian kale.

Pros: Friendly wait staff, Excellent food, Eclectic decor
Cons: Serves meat

Went there with some friends a few weeks ago and was very happy with it. The drinks were good, although the coffee was not great. I did have a delicious mimosa. They wait staff were friendly, and the vegans and vegetarians all left happy.

Pros: Menu, Decor, Wait staff
Cons: Coffee, Wait, Not all dishes were outstanding
