Damn tasty.

Woah, some of the most delicious and interesting bites ever. Don’t miss the wontons- absolutely heavenly. I got the tofu fungus dish and it was so great. Wow wow wow. You have to scan the menu through WeChat or the Alipay app to order.

Pros: All vegan

Cons: Hard to find, upstairs of building

My favorite place in Shanghai

I ate there every day when I was in Shanghai. In my opinion, the top dishes are ribs and dumplings with nut sauce. Don’t forget to order some plain rice. You can scan qr-code and order by WeChat, it’s very convenient

So happy to find this restaurant

Although we arrived late (just before 8 pm) staff were helpful and assisted us to order our dinner. We enjoyed every meal chosen based on the photos left in previous reviews. Thank you Happy Cow

So Much Choice!

A return to Shanghai meant a return here, this used to be one of my lunch time regulars, when we walked in the main woman recognised us & said we hadn't been for a long time, I told her we no longer lived in China & had just arrived the previous night. We we came here twice on this visit, the first time we had spring rolls, fried noodles & steamed dumplings all as good as I remember. The second visit was with anon-vegan friend, we had the stuffed lotus root, steamed dumplings, wheat gluten, mixed veg curry and a new dish of salt & pepper tofu which was delicious. Our friend was very impressed. This is really a great cheap & tasty lunch spot.

So this has now become a regular on my circuit of restaurants. My brother was visiting me and I took him here to try the dumplings but more so to try the battered stuffed lotus root, they are similar to large thick slices of potato in batter that are served in chippies in Manchester where we grew up, also the mixed veg curry was amazing with fried potato, broccoli, mushrooms and carrot, this has become a must have. My most recent visit was with three other vegans, we ordered so much food the owner was worried we wouldn't finish it all, we did all but three steamed buns which we took away. The wheat gluten with veg is delicious, such a light tasty gravy. The walnut buns are almost like a pecan pie, the Buddha cakes are delicious 6 round green pastry cookies with sesame seeds and inside is taro or purple sweet potato. All our food for four people came to 369 rmb which is a bargain. My advice is to bring your own take away container and order more than you eat, you'll be glad to take away the leftovers and have them later. Also the staff are lovely and friendly.

Delicious good value food

A good simple little cafe restaurant that offers a great selection of faux meat dishes including Chinese and International options. Ordering is done by scanning a QR code on the table. This unfortunately required a smart phone with WeChat installed. As Westerners we do not have access to this service, but thankfully a helpful member of staff gave us their phone to order from. I used my phone with a translation app to do the rest 👍 Payment is via AliPay, WeChat Pay or cash only.

To find the restaurant follow the address on Happy Cow and head up the outside stairs next to the large “EAST HUALHAI INTERNATIONAL MANSION” sign and go inside through the doors. You will enter an office building reception foyer. Go straight ahead to the elevator and go to level 2. Exit the elevator and the restaurant is directly in front of you.

Pros: Great selection of dishes, Very good value for money , Helpful staff

Cons: Ordering via WeChat QR is tricky for tourists, No English menu , A little tricky to find

Great authentic local food!!

If you want an unpretentious place serving Chinese food to locals, this is the place! One of the tastiest places in Shanghai for vegan food. The dumplings with peanut sauce are amazing! They politely discouraged me from following my instinct to over-order. The food was the right portion and less than 190 RMB

Pros: Authentic , Kind, Cheap

Cons: WeChat ordering

SO yum

Food was great! Very large portions, we definitely over ordered but the photos on the menu didn’t look to be that big. My friend and I shared a noodle dish, the dumpling soup, a curry soup, and fried tofu. I wish I came with more people to try more items.

Pros: Curry style soup, Dumplings , Easy to find

Friendly, clean with good variety

Easy to find. Helpful staff via translation apps and hand gestures. Ok prices and variety. Dumplings, mock meats, veggies. Only concern was tough for me to double confirm all vegan due to not knowing Chinese. All signs indicated vegan though!

Don't miss it

This the only place I've tried on a layover in Shanghai, so I can't compare but it didn't disappoint. The staff is very nice: i don't have wechat but they helped me order. Food is VERY tasty! The combination of spicies is perfect.

Pros: Tasty food, Kind staff

Amazing!

We dined her with a friend for our first night in Shanghai. 孜然羊肉串、麻辣干锅、什锦炒面、时蔬豆干、红烧五花肉(乱编的,但菜上面有香菜🤮)。
Everything was great except for their generous amount of cilantro. For such a low price, you really can’t go wrong with any choice.
We were ravenous and forgot to take any pictures.

Highly recommended if you are on a budget run.

Pros: All vegan, Affordable, Great taste

Cons: Cilantro🤮

Fabulous food welcoming staff

We found this place from all the reviews here. We massively over ordered but wanted to try as many dishes as possible! We took lots home for the next few days. They do really well at mock meats/fish as well as straight vege/vegan dishes. I’m currently living in Shanghai so will see this as being a regular spot 😊

Pros: Tasty food with lots of choices, Great portions and prices , Friendly staff

Cons: Odd place to find ( follow previous instructions), Tired looking venue

Tasty, affordable food

Easy to find if you follow previous reviews (check the pictures).
Ordering and payment via Alipay but can be also done cash (waitress will let customers use her phone for menu which is mandarin only but with pictures).
We paid 180 for enough food drinks for two persons which is a good deal in Shanghai.

Pros: Tasty , Cheap, Friendly staff

Our favourite vegan restaurant in Shanghai

We loved this restaurant during our time living in Shanghai, visiting at least 10-15 times and even ordering takeaway from here once or twice. Very good value, delicious food and lovely staff. The restaurant is located on floor 2 inside a bar and restaurant complex. There are several restaurants on floor 2 - look for the one with big glass windows. Menu is accessed by scanning the QR code on the tables using WeChat of Alipay.

Our favourite dishes included the spring rolls, fried noodles, curried veg, hand-torn cabbage, wontons and the house rice. Most dishes use an excellent vegan meat/fish substitute.

Cheap and tasty

I went here twice, fairly easy to find but I did have to wake up the whole staff like another reviewer 🤣 staff are nice but ordering is now done on alipay and I couldn't work out how to get the menu in English and I can't pay via alipay so it was a bit of a faff ordering. I went twice, the first time I was the only one in the restaurant and ordered about 100 rmb of food which turned out to be way too much. They put my leftovers in boxes for me and I had enough for dinner and breakfast the next day. Went back for lunch so had this food 4 meals in a row! The second day I went earlier (11.30am) and the restaurant was a lot more full and vibrant.

Pros: Cheap, Tasty

Cons: Had to wake staff, No English menu

Amazing place, so many options

Took me a little bit to find it and once I arrived most of the staff were sleeping. I had to wake up the woman working, but once awake she was sooo helpful. My mandarin isn't perfect, but she was so patient with me and we managed to something for what I was craving. And boy was it delicious!

Pros: Great customer service , Sooo many options

Cons: A bit tricky to find

I would live here if I could

This was some of the most delicious food I have ever eaten. 6 months later and my kids are still talking about how good it was. We had a huge variety of dishes in the two times we went here. The pesto noodles were a welcome change from heavier Asian options and my daughter truly enjoyed her vegan pork chop. We are a little of everything but the walnut buns were decidedly the best food we ever tasted. My life goal is to find a recipe to make these at home. Don’t miss out on this place. It’s truly wonderful.

Delish Shanghai flavours

The ribs omg yes. So sweet and yummy. iPad menu has An English version and staff are lovely. Giant HappyCow logo in the window and “vegetarian” in English on their big sign. Wish I had longer in Shanghai so I could come back and try more dishes!

Best in Shanghai

I came here three days in a row. Food is great, everything I had was too sweet though, the reason might be Shanghai itself. They have lots of substitute for any kind of meat. Staff is friendly, they don't speak English but they have an English menu on tablet PC. Must be aware, menu is a bit deceptive, portions look so small that makes you feel like you have to order multiple options. Portions are fullfilling.
