Loved it!

I absolutely loved this place! I can't recommend it enough. Lots of dishes available. I was so hungry I ordered 3 (delicious) meals. There's also some nice craft beers available. The staff spoke good English and were friendly. Pulp Fiction was also projected onto the wall whilst I was there which I thought was pretty cool. My non-vegan friend had the olive pasta and was full of praise (which is rare). There's a clear sign at the entrance stating it is a vegan place which I found comforting. It's on the second floor, be careful not to go into the bar on the first floor (a mistake I initially made!)

Pros: Great food, Friendly staff, Pretty quick.

Perfect

Nice and cosy little restaurant with good food and helpful staff. We had an amazing dinner and have no complains at all. It's sort of a tapas place, you order a few dishes and share. We ate the brushetta and rainbow salad (so good!), wraps, fried tofu and fries. We will come again before our weak here in Tokyo has come to an end!

Great Spot!

We had a few dishes and they were all delicious; gyoza, jerk soy chicken, fries and a soy chicken dish. Will definitely be going back! Great spot to "hang out" and friendly staff.

Best vegan restaurant in Tokyo!

I have been slowly exploring all the vegan restaurants in Tokyo, this restaurant is without doubt the most progressive and interesting in Japan. They have an intimate, warm atmosphere and an incredible selection to choose from.
I am not vegan, I am a food enthusiast and this is my favourite restaurant in Japan. I can't get enough

Pros: all vegan and lots to choose from, great selection of beers they will do take away if, large portions they are really friendly and speak

Cons: it can be a little expensive if you buy a lot

A vegan izakaya

Hangout is a small izakaya with izakaya-worthy food. Nice staff, nice atmosphere, tables and chairs spaced well, chairs comfortable enough (I am a stickler for comfortable chairs). Wasn't exactly crowded when we were there - only one other party. But since the place is small we didn't mind it. This way the service was fast! As for the food, it's pretty good, typical izakaya fare but veganized, something that is sorely needed in this city. It's fun and most certainly not health food. The quality and creativity is a good notch above many other places and on par with T's I would say.

What I really appreciate is that they seem to like experimenting with new dishes. Yes!! Please continue! Try something new every month! Get some recipe books from overseas, too, escape the group think that bogs down so many vegan restaurants in this town!!

We had maybe ten dishes (we're big guys) and a few beers each. Liked everything but esp the gaudi salad, the cashew/cucumber dish, the spaghetti in a mushroom/hemp sauce and the wasabi coated "meat" nuggets. Set us back 12,000 but I think that's on the high end of what two people could drop in this place. Well, if you drink wine you may be able to top this but otherwise it's hard to imagine.

This would be a great place to book out for a small party. Nice one!

Pros: Above average quality food, Changing menu, Nice atmosphere

Cons: Still rely too much on typical soy meat

Awesome food with great vibes

My husband and I went to Hang Out during our vacation and had a great experience. The staff was very friendly and spoke good english. We ordered 5 - 6 dishes on the menu and they were all great. The rainbow salad was really fresh while the cucumbers & cashews in natto sauce was quite innovative. The sake was also delicious. The music playing and friendly environment made for one of our favorite meals while on vacation. Highly recommend a visit for dinner.

Great atmosphere, food and service...

This place was not what I expected - in a good way. It is an intimate, warm, interesting space with only a small number of tables. We were seated quickly and provided with not just a menu but also a book of photos of the dishes. The waiter patiently explained dishes to my non-vegan companion. We ordered gyoza, soy meat with wasabi sauce and bibimbap as appetisers. All of these were delicious and around ¥700-¥800 each, but the wasabi dish stood out as having a very nice and interesting flavour, without being too mock meaty. As a main we ordered the pasta with hemp cream, around ¥1200, and that was great too. The restaurant serves beer and wine and I ordered a nice dry sake. After finishing dinner and relaxing in the nice atmosphere for a while, chatting and watching the video projections on the wall, we ordered dessert: one chocolate ice cream and one vanilla ice cream. Although it was beautifully presented, with cashews, almonds, chocolate balls, berries and a sprig of parsley, the portion was unfortunately as dainty as the serving glass - about half a scoop of not very good quality (like a slightly gritty but creamy sorbet) ice cream for ¥600 a glass. This is a wonderful place with a great atmosphere and I'll be back for an occasion but I'll think twice about dessert.

Pros: Great vegan food, Nice space with great atmosphere

Cons: Dessert expensive, low quality and small portions

Fave Place in Tokyo

I LOVE Hang Out. "Small Portions" blah blah - bros: this is tapas style - you don't order one thing each and there's your meal! Two people going should order three - five dishes for sharing depending on your appetite. Also ideal for big groups, order a bunch of plates and dig in together.

The food is great, and considering the quality and the fact that this is clearly the best vegan food in Tokyo it is totally worth the money.

Be prepared to spend around the 5000 yen mark for five or so dishes and a couple of drinks.

The vibe is cool, with good tunes, excellent funky decor, and a neat balcony if you manage to bags it!

My top choices here:
The wasabi soy meat - fried goodness
The gyoza - standard but I always love gyoza
The fresh wrap - throw a healthy twist in.

Add beer and you have a great vegan night of eating and drinking - who thought it was possible!?

Pros: Good food, Good vibe, Good times

Chilled atmosphere with scrumptious food

I love the vibe of Hang Out. Its laid back. Its got cool music. The perfect place to literally hang out with your friends!

The food was ah-mazing. The portions were small but the idea is to come here with a small group of friends and order a hand full of dishes to share.

The food my not be the healthiest, as it consists of mostly fried food but I can't deny that it does not only taste good but goes very well with beer.

A must visit if you are in Shibuya. If you are not in the area, Hang Out is definitely worth going out of the way for!

Pros: Friendly Staff, Awesome Vibe, Delicious Food

These guys deserve more cred.

We went here an evening after some shopping in Shibuya. We are frequent visitors of the city, at one point I lived here for a while. I know how hard it is to find good vegan/vegetarian food. Our trips have been highs and lows.

This is by far the best food I've eaten in Japan.
Some previous reviewers had opinions about the origin of other patrons, or the lack of rice? This is like a izakaya meets tapas but in a super laid back way, without trying to hard. If you go here and eat one dish each, you will not understand what it is about.

I would recommend anybody going to this place to have the Garden Salad as a centerpiece and then order dishes around that. The first night (2 persons) we had the salad, gyoza, deepfried tofu with tartar sauce, soymeat in sweet vinegar (this one is to die for) and the hemp croquette. They had good organic beer and good sake options.

The second time I brought another friend, meat eater, and he was impressed too. That time we also tried the fried seitan, and the soymeat ginger fry, both super delicious.

Do you want to eat tasty food and try japanese style dishes that you usually can't because they contain meat/fish, then this is the place for you. If you're looking for Shojin Ryori then this is NOT the place for you.

The staff is helpfull and super nice. Can not recommend this place enough!

// The two Swedes =)

Pros: Excellent food, Good vibe/music, Service

Cons: "only" 2 sake options

Friendly, laid-back space with brilliant food

On our first night in Tokyo, based on Happy Cow reviews, my vegan partner and I made a beeline for Hang Out. We are so glad we did.

The space is cozy, laid-back and full of character, a welcome above-the-street escape from the bustle of Shibuya. The two guys who work there were very friendly, laid-back and helpful, and the service was fantastic. For English-speaking travellers, the full picture menu in English is perfect, but beyond that the guys have solid English and definitely make you feel comfortable with any questions.

Then there was the food: gorgeous. We had the little dish of pickles -- delicious -- and deep fried tofu in taru taru sauce, which was perfect. Veggie gyoza were nicely filled and delicious, and the chirashi sushi was a perfect rice dish to accompany.

We had a beautiful meal, with a glass of wine and sake, and enjoyed every minute. Wish we were here in a warmer season, the patio must be great when it's open.

One funny thing about going to vegan-friendly restaurants in Japan... You tend to run into folks. When we arrived at Tokyo Station that day, we went to T's Tan Tan vegan ramen shop (amazing). Well, when we walked into Hang Out for dinner, lo and behold the two guys we'd been sandwiched next to at the ramen shop were the only other customers at Hang Out! We had a good laugh over that. In a city this size, it's sort of fun to realize there's a more cozy circuit of vegan places.

Anyway -- if you're looking for veggie places in Tokyo, you will be glad you visited here. Thanks to the Hang Out for a fantastic first night in Tokyo!

Pros: Relaxed vibe, Excellent food, Fantastic location

Decent vegan food that isn't health food

The food was good. Not amazing, but well in line with my expectations for that sort of establishment. As an ethical vegan rather than someone in it for the health benefits, it was nice for a change to visit a vegan place in Japan that was not trying to be super-healthy.

The staff were helpful and had excellent English, and an English menu was available. The meals were decently sized, although they were expensive for the type of food, especially when rice had to be ordered separately.

Whether this is a pro or con depend on your perspective, but it was the only veg place I visited in Japan that seemed to attract a very Western market - while we were there, we only saw non-Japanese customers.

Pros: English menu available, Staff have great English

Cons: Rice not included with meal

Hang Out

This place is amazing. A really short walk from Shibuya station and easy to find. This place has a really chilled atmosphere and the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The food is really well made and presented, I took some meat eating friends there and they were amazed at the fried soya!! This place has been a lifeline for me as I'm staying near shibuya.

Yummy but small portions

We ate at this restaurant for dinner on a Thursday night. Pop the address into Google maps and look for the sign outside. It's up a little road, in the same building as a few other bars etc but is a couple floors up.

It was empty when we got there and only one staff member on. The menu is a bit limited but it all sounded and looked (they give you a photo book to match to) delicious so we ordered a bunch of different things. The Deep Fried Tofu, vege wraps and vege Gyoza were good as was the Tomato and olive pasta. Some other people came in while we were there and the poor staff guy was run off his feet serving them, us and cooking all the food! He did a great job and we didn't mind the wait but if you're in a hurry you might!

Pros: Relaxed vibe, Yum food

Cons: Portions a bit small (order lots! :) )

First of all we would like to thank you for your review and compliments.

Actually, we are two persons working, but that day inevitably, one of us had to take the day off.
If you have a chance, feel free to pass by and we promise a true ninja style fast service!

Cheers!

cute and yummy

Pretty small inside, but very nice ambience. Cozy. No English menu yet, but they had a menu with photos, so we just pointed to it :) We had two different types of soy meat and the BBQ fries. Everything was excellent, especially the fried "meat". Portions were smallish, so if you're REALLY hungry, order two! Food is tasty and satisfying. Nice selection of beer and alcohol. Great location and easy to find if you put the address in google maps. It's located on the second floor, so look for the sign.
