When Foodies opened I was overjoyed; there is virtually nowhere vegan-friendly in town and before they opened I had to drive to Paw Paw, Kalamazoo, Berrien Springs, or Mishawaka if I wanted to dine out. Foodies changed all of that. This is one place in the middle of nowhere where staff don't look at you like you're insane if you order something made vegan. The owner is friendly and super-accommodating and she will customize virtually anything you want to eat in order to make it vegan-friendly. The black bean burger is not vegan, but there is one wrap on the menu that's vegan by request (the Heidi wrap) and it's different each time you order it because they use whatever veggies are in season. The hummus is great--better than what I make at home. You can also order the oatmeal made without milk (usually comes with apples and raisins--yum!), a side of potatoes, sometimes the soup in summertime (gazpacho--also yum!), or a salad. I never order salads in restaurants but if you ask them to make you a vegan one off-menu using whatever fruits and veggies they have on hand and the house-made vinaigrette you will not be disappointed. I've had the best-ever salads at this place--substantial, colorful, fresh ones that leave you feeling full and happy. Their prices are cheap and the staff are really friendly; there's free wifi and outlets available, and they let you hang out even though it's a table-service kind of place. Just make your dietary needs clear to your server and you'll have a good experience. If you're a vegan stuck in or passing through Dowagiac, this is the place to eat.
