Stopped by this place last night, and sadly, it has been replaced by a non-veg bar/restaurant.

Very, very, very bad

This is a relatively cheap place for right off Istiklal Cad. However, there are a number of cheaper places just a few minute walk that will have salad and soup. I have gone here 4 times and each time the food was so gross I couldn't finish half to most of it. The soup was flavorless or way too salty, it had weird chunks in it that weren't supposed to be in it, grains such as bulgar were inproperly cooked and rock hard, and please be aware that most of the soup has either tavuk suyu or et suyu (chicken or beef stock). The salad bar had rotting vegetables in it and the nohut in the rice with chickpeas was extremely hard and undercooked. I see no reason to go to this place over salad station or any of the other nearby better places. Horrible food. Really, truly gross.

Pros: cheap, salt may be iodized, variety of bad soups
Cons: rotting vegetables, grains and beans not cooked, flavor of soup

Tasty food on a budget

I really enjoyed both my visits to this soup bar. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Despite my lack of Turkish, they tried very hard to understand my dietary requirements. It is a drop-in, informal place, or you can get a take-away. It is self-service. The staff behind the counter can tell you which vegetarian soups there are - on both visits, there were at least five or six vegetarian soup choices, plus two or three veg side dishes (such as potato balls, and veggie fritters. I was told that many of the soups change daily. There is also a self-service salad bar, with several vegetarian choices. Very reasonably priced, and a great place to fill up if you are in the Istiklal Caddesi area. For vegans, the choice is probably smaller, as I noticed that they did use cheese in some of the veg soups, however it would definitely be worth askng the staff (perhaps also worth knowing how to say explain what vegan is in Turkish!). Lovely, welcoming and cheap place to eat!
