Unfortunately our experience at Chennai Bhavan was very different from the other reviews. Service was slow and they forgot some of the dishes we had ordered, the food was cold and rather tasteless... a real shame considering we were really looking forward to enjoying some genuine Indian cuisine.

The first disappointment of the evening came when the waiter informed us that only the southern Indian dishes were available - no northern Indian dishes available (?) thus eliminating almost half of the menu's options. We tried the spring rolls, onion othappam, banana badji, samosas, medu vadai, navarathna kurma and the thali. Only the badji managed to garner some enthusiasm from us.

On the plus side, the prices are great - 38 euro for 4 people! (no desserts or drinks)

It is unlikely that we will be going to Chennai Bhavan again - other non-veg Indian restaurants in Paris offer good alternatives for vegetarians with, in my opinion, a much higher quality.

Spicy vegetarian Parisian delight

Visited Chennai Bhavan on a Friday in January 2010. The restaurant has good metro/public transport links but it's not in a traditional 'tourist' hotspot.

The only diners for the evening were ourselves and an Indian family. The all-vegetarian menu was extensive with english translations printed.

We love Indian food and was very impressed to find dishes on the menu which we had never heard of/tried. We ordered a variety of dishes to share. These came out one at a time when cooked - this was a bit of a shame as for some dishes we needed bread/rice with them and they were still being cooked.

The staff didn't speak english but they were very helpful and friendly - bringing us a jug of water for the meal. The deep fried chillies were amazing...amazingly hot!!

The dishes were large, well-cooked, flavoursome and very reasonably priced (our meal came to €25).

I didn't use the toilets so I'm not sure if they had any.

Afterwards, we walked off our meal and went to the Sacre Coeur to enjoy the wonderful views of Paris.

Definitely highly recommended from me if you like Indian cuisine.

Pros: Vegetarian, Indian, Flavours
Cons: Dishes cooked at random, Non-English speaking, Unsure if they have toilets

If you ever had true Indian food before, you will never go back to another restaurant than this one. Conveniently located super close to Gare du Nord train station, it does not look like a super posh place but the food is amazing.
Most of the time, I'm disappointed by the super soft food offered by westernized Indian places.
Here the genuine 100% vegetarian food is spicy as expected, tasty and in some respect special. Last time I had such a good experience with Indian food was at Dubai's Govinda.
Service is very helpful even if it needs some improvement in French skills and a more detailed menu would be welcomed.

Pros: Indian Food!
