more than just sweets, tea, and cheese

I just had dinner at this delightful spot. Tucked into a side street in the tourist-ridden and quite pricey but beautiful El Calafate, Kalushen feels like a combination dining nook/family room. Featuring a menu that is 100% vegetarian with numerous vegan options, their fare is simple but savory. I had the lentil burger--obviously made upon ordering and cooked just right with the edges of the burger all crispy. This comes with a generous serving of brown rice, seasonal vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, pumpkin), and a very fresh side salad, all for 40 pesos, a steal in this town. I opted to get one of their lunchbox meals for my trek tomorrow, which includes a soy burger sandwich, fruit, water, and a sweet. Can't wait.

Pros: fresh, ample portions, health-conscious
Cons: doesn't open until 4pm

Veg in Patagonia

4 Posted on 03 / 02 / 2011

A breath of fresh air amidst the "asados" going on everywhere in Calafate. Kau Kaleshen is a cute little cottage warmly decorated and serving a good selection of mostly vegetarian dishes, with some vegan options available. The veggies patagónicos are great but beware because there are several types and some contain cheese - be sure to specify. We ate here twice and were very satisfied, although we found them to be a bit inflexible with regards to the options. We also ordered the lunch box to take away (for the flight back to Buenos Aires!) and it was great. However I was quite disappointed that of the three lunch boxes available, one included a ham and cheese sandwich. I would've appreciated them sticking to 100% veg.

positive surprise

5 Posted on 02 / 05 / 2011

Actually Kau Kaleshen is a hotel. if we have knew that we would have stayed there. We didnt expect a lot but were really positively surprised. as we are very limited with spanish, the waitress called the chef. she happily showed us all vegan options. first we got offered a very delicious beetroot "mayonaise" with freshly bake wholegrain bread. wow what a start! i normally dont like beetroot but this really was a nice mayonaise.
to say, in argentina they dont have white vegan mayonaise as we are used to. they had it few years ago but then mysteriously gone in the shops. so mostly they serve hummous or a carrot mayonaise.
this was followed by a nice simple pea/potatoe soup with some sesame seeds. as main dish i had a mushroom risotto with tofu. there were different types of mushroom and they were very rich in flavour and the rice perfect to the point.
something else they had on the menu was rice with vegetables and tofu. my boyfriends option the vegan schnitzel milanese sandwich. and wow this is a nice size sandwich! prepared with love for sure. very fresh bread with carrots, different green leaves, tomatoes, avocado, different seeds and yeast flakes with a red pepper sauce and some crisps on the side. the waitress was very attentive. the owners really try to push vegetarianism in their village and they really do it with passion. on the menu we saw that they made lunchboxes, so as they are closed on monday and we went on a daytrip we ordered two. the same sandwich as my boyfriend had for dinner. they are huge but i can tell you everyone stared at us when eating these on a bench!!!
as el calafate is in the south they dont have lots of local vegetables so the menus are kept simple, which is perfectly fine to me. the preparation of the food is the point and that is just perfect!

Pros: DELICIOUS
Cons: closed on monday

Un lugar increible / An amaizing place

5 Posted on 10 / 03 / 2010

Since the moment that i entered to kau kaleshe, began an incleible experience. A very confortable plece, only one block from the main street. A great attention form Paula, that was very kind with everthing. And the food.... wooowwww!!!!!!!!!! this place is the only 100% vegetarian, with many vegan option in El Calafate. They have options with seitan, quinoa, yamani rice, ande the very famous soyabean burgers called "veggies patagonicos". We even choose for our dinner an organic wine that was exelet

Pros: exelent attention, great food, vegan options
