Tasty breakfast comfort food

Along with the standard tofu scramble and such, Beans and Barley also has some comfort breakfast food that is hard to find vegan versions of. This includes biscuits and gravy, pancakes, etc. All very good, if a little expensive. Would go there again.

A Must-Visit Place In Milwaukee

I can always get a great vegan meal here. While they may not offer as many vegan options as they used to, what they do have left on the menu is very, very good, and WAY better than many other restaurants that claim to serve vegans. Especially the dessert! In many restaurants there is no vegan dessert option at all - here you can get delicious chocolate cake, and this was a peanut butter & chocolate cake! Fantastic. The "B"LT sandwich was tasty, filling, would be ordered again for sure. Friendly, efficient wait staff. They even let post a flyer for my charity event on their community bulletin board. Then we went shopping in their attached store and bought some kitschy soap. If you're vegan in Milwaukee, it's definitely a good place to go for an excellent meal. I wonder if Beans and Barley is reducing their vegan items from their menu because there are so many more restaurants now in the city where a vegan can go, I don't know. (Written in 2019)

Delicious food, lots of options

Lovely place! We went for brunch and although it didn’t look busy, it took a long time to get our food.

Pros: Lots of vegan options! Vegan pancakes!, Clearly labelled food, Cute market with lots of eco products and deli

Cons: Staff seemed overwhelmed at brunch

Always a classic go-to

I've been enjoying eating here for at least 20 years. I can't think of any negatives. Love the market too for browsing after a meal for a few essentials.

Pros: Many vegan options , Comfortable spacious dining area , Walkable

Tastiest tofu scramble

Tofu scramble is one of the best (maybe even the best) I've had. BUT I was disappointed that the tofu scramble, which is marked vegan on the menu, came with a pat of butter by default. Remember to ask for two jams and no butter!! They have many vegan options, desserts included.

Pros: Lots of vegan options, Small market to browse

Cons: Butter included with tofu scramble. Ask for 2 jams, Expect to wait during busy times

Very good diner food

Great for diner-style food, especially breakfast. The tofu scramble is especially good and the vegan biscuits are fun. A cute place attached to a supermarket.

Love it!

I've been to Beans & Barley a few times and never been disappointed. They have lots of vegan options on the menu, with everything labeled. I've had the balsamic tofu sandwich and the sweet potato black bean burrito (vegan-style) and enjoyed both. They always have vegan dessert options too.

Pros: Vegan items labeled, Friendly staff, Cool Vibes

Good food & location

I’ve never had a bad dish here. It usually takes awhile to get a table (although I tend to come at the traditionally busy times), but half of the restaurant is a little grocery store with lots of fantastically fun gift items to peruse while you wait.

Love this so hard!

Erin, the bartender was awesome. Adorable and friendly. I had a cup of vegan chili, the black bean and sweet potato burrito without the lime cream sauce. I save half of it for lunch for the next day and I'm so frustrated that I left it in my hotel room fridge. To my best friend demanded that I could not leave the city until I tried the raspberry cake, but unfortunately they were out. I did enjoy the four layer chocolate cake. It was amazing. The store which is attached to it had so many cute and eclectic gifts. It is not a fast place so know that going into it. I was disappointed with they hosted. She never did greet me and after 5 minutes and some people stepping in front of me she seat that them before me. But overall it was a great experience. I enjoyed chatting with some of the other customers, as well. I will for sure be back on my next trip to Milwaukee.

Tasty cafe and fun shop!

This is kind of the vegan/vegetarian mainstay in Milwaukee - if you mention you're veg to someone in the greater Milwaukee area, they say "oh, have you been to Beans and Barley?" The food is good, but not necessarily the best in the city - their desserts are great, though, especially the cakes (they also have big cookies from East Side Ovens, try the chocolate mint one, mmmm). My favorite order is the tofu burger; their veggie chili is also really good, and they usually have at least one other vegan soup. The deli counter is great if you're looking for something quick to take away, and everything is labeled as vegan/vegetarian/non-veg. The grocery/shop part is also really fun, and has good veg staples (vegan mayo, different vegan milks, soy/almond ice cream, etc) and treats (candy, chocolates).

Pros: Fun shops, Big menu, Great deli counter

Cons: Long wait at times (brunch)

Cafe & Grocery

Beans and Barley is a super popular cafe (packed near close when I visited) luckily the chefs in the back are happy to take a last minute order for anyone sitting at the counter! You can also get a decent selection of the food they make in the cold section of the grocery area. Beans & Barley is definitely the go to place for vegan food on a cold night, the cafe like atmosphere is great. I opted for a custom veggie sandwich, but the burritos looked amazing, too!

Pros: neat place

Cons: meat/fish/cheese on menu

Beans & Barley Cafe

Beans and Barley is a cute, and apparently very popular, cafe located in Milwaukee. They're a little busy on the weekends so expect to wait about 20 minutes until you're seated. If you're traveling with (or need to compromise with) a non-vegan, I think this would be a good place to take them as there are tasty options for everyone. For my entrée I ordered the Tofu Burger - I was attracted to this items as the patty is made locally by Simple Soyman in Milwaukee. The burger comes on a toasted bun with lettuce, tomatoes, vegenaise, and vegan cheese (upon request). The burger patty was really good, I didn't even taste/notice the tofu, as it tasted mostly of vegetables. All in all I thought the burger was good and I'd certainly order it again. I give this place 3.5 cows but will up it to 4 considering the number of options they offer and the area they operate in.

Bring your republican family members

I like Beans&Barley. I have been a patron of their grocery and cafe for many years. However it seems each year that the cafe's options for vegans diminishes in variety, portion size and flavor. It serves "healthy American" cuisine and really it is one of the only places I can take my family out to dinner, since they will not try ethnic foods nor eat vegetarian. It is clean, classy, a little expensive for what you get. The service reminds me of much higher dining. The staff maintain a high level of etiquette. The grocery is well stocked for its size and reasonably priced. Plus they have parking. (so my family doesn't have to walk more than 20ft)

Pros: clean/crisp atmosphere, healthy american cuisine, vegan grocery selections

Cons: snootie clientel, boring food options

um...YUM!

So...anyone that comes to Milwaukee or lives in Milwaukee MUST eat here at least once. I promise you that you will constantly CRAVE their vegetarian chili because well it have been voted best chili like 3 years in a row. Personally I love their burritos but they are different! There is stuff on the menu for meat eaters too!

Pros: yummy, friendly staff

Cons: small seating area, so you might have to wait, thats all thou!
