cheap & affordable no frills place

Went here with a friend recently. Had the potato & kasha knishes. They hit the spot. They were served w/ mustard & a vegan gravy. Hearty & authentic. Cheap & affordable no frills place.

They have been around forever. Mostly counter seating. Some of the Beat writers would frequent here include Ginsberg & Kerouac back in the day.

It isn't exclusively vegetarian yet follow kosher laws on how food is prepared. My friend is an omnivore so enjoyed his salad w/ salmon.

Would have liked more vegan options yet a unique experience as let's face it you would be hard pressed to find an authentic knish in San Francisco!

Pros: cheap & affordable no frills place

Not too vegan friendly for a "vegetarian" place

I got a borscht and without asking they packaged it to go.. felt awful to have to discard that much plastic for a small cup of soup. Perhaps you have to sit down and hope someone takes your order if you intend to dine in. Also it comes with challah bread that is not vegan. Have to ask about everything.. and how is it that they call themselves vegetarian when they serve fish?

Gosh... A place that calls itself vegetarian that serves fish?
I wonder how well they prevent cross-contamination.
The smell of fish is repulsive to me. I doubt I could even go in there.

Low-key, very high quality, ‚home made‘

Excellent, 100% low-key restaurant, probably the smallest in Manhattan since Polish ‚Stage Café‘ across the street of B&H folded. Kosher / vegetarian but that includes fish etc. Enough vegan options which are labeled ‚vegetarian’ — so ask staff. Dishes of the day available. Open on Sundays. Close to Astor Pl subway stop and bus stops. Full meal including soup around 13 USD. Friendly staff, do not forget to tip them even though they operate f/ behind the counter. Cash only, ATM outside. Would get five stars if it was vegan.

Pros: Very good „home made“ food, smallest restaurant in Manhattan, super nice hood
