Review: i've been twice for the lunch buffet, which is great. All vegetarian, so you don't feel left out. As soon as i sat a staffer walks over and shows me on a map the region of India the days cuisine is inspired by. Good food. Not mind blowing, but good.
i went with a date once--the food and service were fine. Neat atmosphere once you're inside. Outside, it's obviously a downtown business area where no one lives and thus no curb appeal.
Pros: All vegetarian * Lunch buffet * Indian
Cons: Location * Hours * |

Review: We went to the Nirvana location at the old post office building food court. The people behind the counter told us that this Nirvana and the other location are owned by the same people.
The food was decent and reasonably priced (only about $7 each for a full meal with soup, main, rice, and a pakora,) and the people behind the counter knew exactly which items were vegan. There wasn't a lot of choice, but it was a food court, so that was to be expected. The staff were very polite and pleasant.
It was great to get such good and reasonably priced food right in the middle of D.C's tourist haunts.
The cleanliness looked somewhat suspect, however.
One thing about the food: the vegetables in the rice appeared to be from a frozen vegetable mix and were rather unpleasant in texture and about 100 per cent taste-free.
Thankfully, the place did not appear to be wimping out on spice: the food was nice and spicy.
Pros: Value. * Location. * Overall taste.
Cons: * * |

Review: I have been to Nirvana twice. I agree with another reviewer who called the food 'mediocre'. What bothered me more though was an unclean feeling in the restaurant. The toilet both times was rather dirty. The second time we ordered wine, and the waitor did not open the bottle at our table. I will not be going back.
Pros: one of the few purely veg places in DC * *
Cons: unclean feeling * food mediocre * |

Review: Nirvana has a good-sized menu with all of their numerous vegan options marked, which I greatly appreciated. They also have numerous vegan wines. The atmosphere is nice and fairly romantic. We were pleased by all of our food, including the Undhio (a Gujarati soulfood dish that you don't see in restaurants often). I was surprised that they don't substitute tofu for paneer in some of their dishes; instead they just drop the protein portion all together. While the food was good on a whole, the portion sizes were really small, so you might want to order appetizers to fill yourself up. The menu says they have daily vegan desserts, but our waiter said they were out. What bothered me most was that the waiter hurried us out of the restaurant after we paid the bill; it was still 15 minutes to closing time, and he told us to move along. So, they lose a star for service, though their food is solid.
Pros: Atypical Indian food * Vegan items marked *
Cons: Service * Portion sizes * Prices |

Review: Nirvana is a regular stop for me when I'm in DC. I've had some iffy experience with service in the past -- waiters not wanting to seat us until the full party arrived, even if they weren't busy; lack of friendliness; that sort of thing. There was a woman working there during my last visit, and she added to a much friendlier atmosphere.
The food and drink are always wonderful. I have only been for dinner and not the lunch buffet.
Pros: tasty entrees * lovely decor * convenient location
Cons: service inconsistent * bathroom could use update * |

Review: Every time I have gone to Nirvana, it has either been amazing or disappointing. However, only one time has it been disappointing, so the odds are completely in every Nirvana-diner's favor!!! The lunch buffet is so overwhelming, with almost all of it being vegan! So tasty! The dishes vary every day by cuisine, so be sure to try them all (though I have yet to do so)! For dinner, if you're not sure what to get, the staff is extremely friendly, especially one of them, who appears to be the only female staff person. They are very accommodating for vegans! The dinner combination is a must if you have a great appetite and dare to try all they have to offer! They will even replenish any component for which you wish to have additional servings, or all of them if you so desire! This is my favorite Indian restaurant that I have ever been to, and I would definitely go here anytime I want Indian food!
Pros: Atmosphere * Selection * Portion sizes
Cons: * * |

Review: There were a lot of appetizers that we have not found in any other restaurants. Try the appetizer sampler platter.
The menu clearly states what is and is not vegan and what can or cannot be made vegan.
Even the wine list is all vegan!
We ran up a huge bill here with the appetizers, meals, and booze. I think this would be a great place to come just for the wine and some appetizers. I really enjoyed this place.
Pros: Vegan options clearly marked * Wines were vegan * Unique selections
Cons: Moderate prices * Small portions * |

Review: While not all dishes here are excellent, a number of them are (especially appetizers), and they have a number of completely unique dishes I've never seen anywhere else. They even have a vegan thali available (an all you can eat assortment of several dishes). Definitely worth a visit to see for yourself, and if you have any questions ask the manager/owner who is quite helpful and willing to accomodate.
