Review: When our family wants a special dinner, we go to Chia Shang. They have a huge selection of vegan and vegetarian dishes ranging from General Tso's Sue Rou (soy based meat balls which are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside) to Stir Fried Potatoes and Peppers (I like to add a $1 order of fried tofu to this). Some of our other favorites are salt and pepper tofu, stir fried bok choy and sauteed tofu with orange sauce. The menu is extensive -- look beyond the pages marked "Vegetarian" to the authentic Chinese selections in the back -- everything in green is vegetarian and excellent. The specials at the restaurant are written in Chinese and it is jammed on weekends. If you ask, the server will recommend a favorite vegan dish. The staff is friendly and asks about my family when I come in alone to get take-out. We liked the previous owner and food, too, but I strongly disagree with the reviewers who say the food is not as good now. It is a different experience, but no less enjoyable -- the food is consistently great! In my travels, have never found any vegetarian Aisan food that comes close to this. It is the best!
Pros: Great food * Nice staff * Vast vegetarian selection
Cons: Slow service when very crowded * Menu could be more succinct * |

Review: This was our favorite restaurant for a long time, but then the super-friendly-helpful owner sold it and now the vegetarian selections aren't as good. *Sigh* Nowadays the food is sort of hit-or-miss. Still good when we're craving Asian fare, but not the stellar place it used to be. Try the orange sue pao, or the fried soy bean skin roll. Their veggie miso used to be the best around, now it's average. Why did they have to change the recipes? I miss our old Chia Shang. On the other hand, next door is the Morgan & York gourmet food store, so good fun shopping while waiting for takeout.
Pros: Generally good food * Lots of selections * Good prices
Cons: Hit-or-miss * Not what it used to be * |
