Review: Eating thai food without worries is a great treat, and makes this place more than worth it. It may not be "classic" thai, but it still tastes good, and that's good enough for me! I LOVE the rice paper wraps (great crunch, and very fresh), and I insist on ordering the soy beef in mushroom gravy whenever I go there. I've stayed away from any of the fake fish (didn't like fish ever, so no reason to start eating it now!) so I have no idea what that's like, but I'm also not much of a fan of the soy duck or even the chicken. I find the soy beef has the best texture and flavour. The cashew curry is lovely also - my partner, who hates other Thai food (and isn't veg) had enjoyed his meals here! The environment is peaceful due to the relatively small space, and the servers are very attentive.
However, it's not cheap, and the portions are fair, but not huge. They have weird lunch hours, and the menu is limited to dishes that aren't my favorites, so I would only recommend going for dinner. Also, the location can be a bit awkward to get to - you'll have to part on the street, and there's not a lot going on in that area. If you're from Old Ottawa South, though, it's a great addition to the community.
Pros: great service * vegan dessert options * flavourful dishes
Cons: not classic thai if that's what you want * awkward location * not a great lunch menu |

Review: Thai food is my favourite kind of food and if that's the case for you too, I doubt you'll be disatisfied with Sacred Garden. I love simple food too, so when I went out for lunch with my family and wasn't feel too well, I order a simple dish of rice with stir-fried vegetables. The sauce used to cook the vegetables in was perfect: light but tasteful. And the vegetables were perfectly cooked, still crunchy. It's not the most high end type of food nor the most authentic (I was served an iceberg lettuce salad on the side), and it is a bit expensive, but the atmosphere inside is nice: quaint and cozy. Service is good.
Pros: great food * good service * good portions
Cons: pricey * not the best quality * not wholly authentic |

Review: This place was comfortable and clean and meals were presented nicely. The food was thai in nature and ingredients, but lacked some authenticity. I found the prices quite high for the amount of food served, but the quality was definately there. For those in my party more accustomed to eating meat, the faux-meat seemed well recieved. For more hard-core vegans/vegitarians, the food was good but not great. This is definately a place for a nice dinner out with friends who are not veg, but not the best thai place in the city. A nice departure from the cold fair of many buffets.
Pros: meat alternatives * nice atmosphere * good served warm
Cons: a little bland * small servings * slow service |

Review: The food is bursting with distinct flavours and the staff is incredibly friendly and attentive. They always remember my preferences and modifications without me even having to mention them. I've tasted about 3/4 of all the dishes on the menu by now and I keep going back week after week. And I love that I don't have to worry about shrimp paste or fish sauce tainting the food because they don't use any.
My favourite dishes are the tofu tod (a great bread-like nugget that's excellent with the sweet chili sauce), the soup with tofu and tomatoes, the spicy noodles (#31), the panang curry with protein "beef" (#29) and the vegetables dishes in either mushroom sauce, the chili sauce or the garlic sauce (#15, 16 and 21 but I could be off by a number or two). The appetizers are about $6-$8, and the main dishes are about $12-$14. They have a vegan dessert now but it's only indicated on the specials menu, not the paper one. It's a wonderful mix of sweet coconut milk, soft coconut slices and tapioca; the perfect complement to the main meal. On the whole, the food here is, by far, the best vegan food I have ever eaten (Thai or otherwise). My non-vegetarian friends and family also think the food is fantastic.
The restaurant is small (maybe 20 tables?) with a lovely decor and soft background music. Parking can easily be found on Sunnyside or in one of the lots of the neighbouring stores after business hours (at your own risk I suppose, but I've never had a problem). There is informal take-out; I've seen many people walk in, order items off the menu and come back 15 minutes later to pick it up. I can't recommend this place enough!
Pros: Wonderful tastes * Excellent service * Peaceful ambiance
Cons: None * * |

Review: The food at Sacred Garden is overpriced, the staff aloof, and the food unauthentic. This is what I would call "Thai food for white people."
I would suggest this restaurant for those who haven't traveled and can't cook. To it's credit, the food was okay, but for those prices it should be good.
Cross the bridge to Gatineau to Chez le Thai for authentic Thai food in a lovely atmosphere for a reasonable price. They offer each dish in vegan with and without tofu. This is real Thai food! The back patio is the calmest I have ever seen with lots of little waterfalls. The staff is great and the food straight from a Thai kitchen!
Pros: clean * *
Cons: Thai food for white people * staff aloof * not good value |

• There are a lot of white people in Ottawa. What do you propose they do - have a racist non-whites door policy? What an incredibly dumb thing to say.. response by kennyp353

Review: Inexpensive food.. Very casual.. I had the daily special which was an Indian platter of dal and chickpeas with rice.. Very flavourful.. A decent sized portion was about $7,50.. I had a freshly squeezed juice of carrot and apple that cost about $3.. My friend had a fresh beet and apple juice.. I am vegan so they made my platter without the yogurt.. This place is vegetarian but has lots of vegan choices (I saw vegan pizza on the menu too).. I really enjoyed this place and will return for sure!
Pros: Taste of food * Varierty * Price
Cons: * * |

Review: it's nice to be able to eat thai and not worry about fish sauce (or getting the kitchen to cook w/o fish sauce). a bit out of the way (if you live central/east/west) but worth the drive. nice decor, solid waitstaff - water filled immediately after glass emptied, tasty food.
Pros: great selection * great taste * great decor
Cons: high-ish prices * no takeout * |
