Cheap, decent vegan food with some yummy deserts!
Posted on 09 / 08 / 2012I used to eat and drink here all the time when I lived in Nottingham. They have a great range of sandwiches, which are good value, and a few decent mains. The smoothies are pretty tasty, too, but I am sure not very healthy! The deserts are REALLY good! Especially the regularly changing experimental vegan cheesecakes.
I agree with the negative comments, though... The place CAN get a fair few posers, and the ethics are a little questionable. I doubt they have changed their supplier since Swedish Glace was taken over by Unilever, either. The owner is a meat-eater in it for the money, not the ethics, after all.
If veganism to you means more than just a diet, you might have a better time at Aubergine Nottingham, but if you are stuck for a vegan snack or fancy a naughty treat in the middle of the day, the Alley Cafe is a good option.
Cons: inconsistent ethics, not a veggie company
Hello, I would just like to say thank you for your review of our cafe...and you're right some of the smoothies aren't very healthy, I would suggest choosing the Lassi combinations or fruit smoothies for a healthier drink.
In response to 'The owner is a meat-eater in it for the money, not the ethics' I would have to disagree. The ownership is a partnership between 3 people, a carnivore, an occasional pescitarian and myself a vegetarian. We all have different catering backgrounds and really enjoy trying to come up with original vegan recipes. We are committed to many environmental aspects when preparing our food; green energy supplier, local producers, organics & fairtrade. We have a few vegans working for us and they wouldn't let us get away with 'bad ethics'
We are also committed to quality, so in regards to the comment about Swedish Glace, I haven't tried a different vegan ice cream yet that has the same quality but please contact us via our website with your suggestions.
Thank you again, and please come and have a chat with us if you think there is any areas in which we can improve
Take Care
