Review: While attending a convention in DC, a group of us wanted to eat at a vegetarian restaurant. Our organizer was asked to leave a credit card# when she booked reservations for 14. She told them that since we were traveling from all over the country, 1 or 2 might not show up. She asked if that would be a problem and was told "no." Twelve of us attended and had a delicious meal, but when it came time to pay the bill, we were told that since only 12 had attended, we would each have to pay $30. That was about $80 more than our bill for food and drink! When we asked the waiter why he hadn't told us earlier (we could have ordered more food, if we knew we'd have to pay anyway,) he said it wasn't his responsibility to tell us that. It was on the website, in small print under "about." They did give a gift certificate for the unused amount, but since we were all from out of town, it wasn't very satisfactory. It ruined our whole trip and left a "bad taste" in our mouths about Vegetate. So, if you plan to take a group to Vegetate, make sure they all show up. Better yet, choose another restaurant
Pros: food pretty good * *
Cons: small portions * charge for no shows * didn't tell us they'd charge |

Review: The sign in the bathroom said it all! Easily the best veggie food you can find in DC and the surrounding area.
All of the courses were brilliant. The half carafes of house wine were really, really nice. It's always good to find slightly cheaper ways to have a fantastic meal out.
I'd definitely recommend taking anyone and everyone to Vegetate. I took my girlfriend and family out for a last meal before leaving town and it was a really lovely experience. They even made the blueberry pie for us from scratch, firing up the oven for us.
Pros: Food * Atmosphere * Plenty of vegan options
Cons: Price * * |

Review: I ATE HERE TWICE WHILE VISITING DC LAST WEEK. I WAS A LITTLE DISAPPOINTED TO ONLY FIND 2 VEGAN DINNER ITEMS ON THE MENU & 2 VEGETARIAN ITEMS. THE SELECTION IS QUITE SMALL. THEY DO HAVE SMALL PLATES & SIDES TO MAKE UP THE MEAL. THE AMBIANCE WAS GREAT. SORT OF A CLUB FEELING. NOT EASILY VISIBLE FROM THE STREET. UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT TO LOOK FOR. THE SIGN IS JUST A NEON V IN THE WINDOW. BUT OVERALL GOOD FOOD.

Review: We went here while vacationing in DC for Thanksgiving week. We showed up for dinner and was asked if we had reservations. We didn't but they sat us anyway. This place is pretty nice, nice decor, dim lighting, pretty swanky. The staff is really nice and helpful. They had a nice selection of drink. The dinner selections were a little on the strange side. We both ended up with the sliced seitan, kale, and garlic dinner. Although it was good it wasn't enough to eat. We had 5 small pieces of seitan. We left and we were still hungry. The prices were a bit expensive for the amount you received. If you want a nice romantic, hip place for a date then this is the place-get a few appetizers so you aren't still hungry!!
Pros: decor * friendly staff *
Cons: pricey * small portions * |

Review: On a recent trip to DC, my hubby and I met some friends at Vegetate. We walked from the Convention Ctr Metro and it is a bit of a sketchy walk in a neighborhood in transition. The restaurant itself is very sleek and chic' and would be great for a date or special occasion. Since our friends were running late, we were asked to go upstairs to the bar and wait for them. When they arrived, there was still plenty of seating, so there were no problems with our table being given away.
The food was good - not the best vegan restaurant I've been too - but still quite tasty. We started with a potato and onion fritata that was a special appetizer and then had the Black Bean Avocado dish followed by the chocolate ganache. The dishes are on the small side, and a bit pricey for what you get. The fritata, for instance, was the size of a mini-cupcake - just barely large enough to share with one person - for $6.
Pros: Good Food * Decent Service * Good date restaurant
Cons: Pricey * Odd location * Small Portions |

Review: The first time I went here, we arrived right when they opened at 6:00, and were the only customers for a good while. Since the staff didn't have anything else to do, they were super-helpful. (When we asked about an unfamiliar ingredient on the menu, our waitress brought out a sample so we could try it - now that's service!) But the next time we came, the place was a bit busier, and I got the distinct impression that we were being snubbed in favor of the "trendier"-looking customers. The food was hit or miss too. A layered polenta-black bean- guacamole-herb salad creation was really fantastic. A small bowl of shredded vegetables swimming in gloppy cashew cream was less so. All the portions are really small, so if you're ravenously hungry when you arrive, you're likely to be left unsatisfied.
Pros: food sometimes good * service sometimes good * nothing else like it in DC
Cons: food sometimes bad * service sometimes bad * small portions, high prices |

Review: I went with a group of five omnivores, and they couldn't stop raving about the food! We ate tapas-style and ordered a whole bunch of little things. The burgers, fries, and mushroom flatbread were standouts. The lemon-thyme martini was wonderful, as were the sorbet and chocolate ganache for dessert. I heartily recommend ordering lots of little things so you can try more of the wonderful flavors.
The place is sleek and modern inside, really sharp-looking. Service was good, though it was hard to be heard over the too-loud music. We were seated upstairs on a warm evening, and it became uncomfortably warm -- maybe a window A/C unit is needed? The menu is very clear on what is and isn't vegan. Parking is a bit of a challenge, as is finding the restaurant. Its sign is easily missed. The neighborhood is also a bit on the "up-and-coming" side, so you may want to take a cab or travel in a group. With Vegetate as a draw, though, I wouldn't be surprised if the whole area took off.
Pros: outstanding food * drinks * decor
Cons: noisy * upstairs can get hot * location |

Review: I went with a group of friends for dinner last night. Was a bit wary after reading the mixed reviews here and elsewhere, but I really liked it. My boyfriend and I ordered two of the 'bites' and three of the small plates. All five dishes were excellent, with the stand-outs being the burger sliders and the butternut squash soup (usually so predictable and boring, but this one had pizazz).
Our friends got entrees, and got pretty much the same amount of food as our small plates at double the price. And I thought their food wasn't as good as ours - the seitan roast in particular was very average. The chocolate ganache desert was rich and yummy, but the bed of lime zest it was on was horrifically bitter. Once we scraped it off we were good to go, but that was a huge misfire.
The atmosphere was nice and the service very good. The reasonably priced house wine was unusual and quite good. I'll definitely go back to check out their spring menu.
Pros: creative dishes * nice atmosphere * good wine
Cons: pricy entrees * some dishes miss the mark * |

Review: I found the service and atmosphere to be fabulous. Vegetate has a good drink menu and great atmosphere for dates. It's urban-chic in a neighborhood that needs some business. The food was also good, though perhaps not worth the high prices (which range from $10-17 per dish). The grilled seitan was a bit chewy, but tasty on a whole. I thought their desserts were distinctive and understated, with unusual tastes (chocolate ganache with balsamic vinegar) that you don't expect.
Pros: Service * Atmosphere * Food
Cons: Prices * * |

Review: My husband were traveling to D.C. and stayed at the Renaissance, just a few blocks from Vegetate. So after we researched this place on HappyCow.net, we decided to walk. BIG mistake. Very scary area. Prostitutes, drunks, etc. Once we arrived were were happily pleased with creative ambiance, food and nice service. Prior to coming, I called to make reservations (as suggested on these reviews), but was informed that it would not be necessary and to come on it. Upon arrival, the hostess was put off when we didn't have a reservation. WHAT? So, regardless of what they tell you on the phone, make the reservation. The place is small; it fills up fast and the door keeper expects one. Enjoy! And take a cab. Scary Streets!!!
Pros: Ambiance * Food *

Review: I have eaten here twice and been disappointed both times. The service is not at the level of fine dining that the prices would lead you to expect. One person was trying to cover the bar and all the tables upstairs on our last visit. We were prevented from sitting at our table because one person had not arrived, and watched as a group from the bar then sat at our reserved table. When our party was complete, the waitress asked the other group to move and seated us without wiping the table off. So why would it have been a problem if we sat there while waiting for our 6th person? What if our 6th person had never shown up, would they have refused us service? 5 people would have been seated at the same table anyhow. The food is not great enough to make up for the uncaring service.

Review: We had to wait over an hour for our table at a different bar, because there was no room at theirs! I'm glad we came back because it was a wonderful vegetarian dining experience. The decor and ambiance is lovely and upscale, the staff was upbeat and attentive (but surely not stuffy!), and the owner took the time to visit and be sure we were enjoying our experience. (As a 20 year veteran of the hospitality industry, I always appreciate that type of attention.) When we complimented the chef, he was kind enough to send her out so we could do so personally.
Our appetizer, entrees (the sliders and homemade ketchup were fantastic!) and dessert were all delicious, as was the organic beer and local wine served. Entree portions are smaller than the oversized portions many Americans are used to, so you won't leave with that uncomfortably stuffed feeling, but rather will leave satisfied that you've had a dining experience to savor.
Pros: Delicious food * Great staff * Nice ambiance
Cons: * * |

Review: I had a good service experience here, despite some of the reviews. I was drawn to this restaurant for the "American" food-you don't see many veg restaurants described this way. I had gnocci with cashew cream sauce which was excellent. The iced tea was also good..I think it was sweetened with stevia, which frankly I'd rather just have good ol' sugar. I thought the free pickled green beans in a flute were cute and I did actually eat some of them. My husband had a cornmeal/black bean patty (I'm sure they had a fancier name for it) and he thought it was good, but not great. He enjoyed his greens that came with it a lot. We did have dessert, my husband had a blue corn muffin with strawberries and rosemary infused ?cashew? cream. He thought the muffin was dry and just plain didn't like the cream. I had a red velvet cupcake with a scoop of ice cream, which was pretty good. Overall, I thought it was a nice experience and decent food. My husband thought it was a bit of a rip-off.
Pros: Creative cuisine * Friendly staff *
Cons: A bit pricey * Small portions * |

Review: I was really happy to see this restaurant and could not have been more disappointed. I ordered the veggi bacon which could only have been harder dipped in cement. Then I ordered the veggi sliders - bun almost as hard as the bacon, mustard way to overpowering. I scraped the mustard off and discovered why there was so much - the patty was extremely salty. I also ordered the fries, which I heard great things about - cold! Their version of ketchup was fantastic - though it's hard to parlay ketchup into a satisfying lunch. My friends did not have a much better experience. I would usually give a restaurant a second chance but this I won't - food was bad and the service was not great either. Not a deal for what I paid.
Pros: Atmosphere * Vegetarian * Shaw
Cons: unattentive waitstaff * overseasoned food * cold food |
