Review: I have been going to eat at Mesob for several years. The food is always excellent - the service is always great. The owners are warm, friendly and make great food. The atmosphere is sophisticated and romantic while stll being family-friendly. I have had Ethopian food all over the US - Chicago, DC, LA, and NJ - and this is the best place. I would eat here every week if I could. I'm not allowed to give Mesob five cows b/c it's not veggie - but they have a solid vegan menu!

Review: We go to Mesob every single Friday night for dinner. The veggie food is vegan...and it's wonderful. We have gone to Ethiopian restaurants all over the world and this one is our fave! The spices are perfect! Dishes range from spicy to almost bland, depending on your individual taste. The staff is fantastic and always there to help. Please give it a try. You will love the food and the atmosphere.
Pros: Vegan * Good Selection * Atmosphere
Cons: Busy at times * * |

• Under "pros" you should NOT say it is "vegan", that is a gross misrepresentation. You can get a few things there that are vegan, but you can also get all sorts of animals and animal products.. response by kindlizard

Review: This place is 2 things: all about the clove, which is an overpowering spice and a little goes a long way. they used way too much leaving the meal hardly edible. And for all that, OVERPRICED. There are 2 types of Ethiopian places one can go. There are those like the ones in major metro areas (Colfax Ave in Denver, SF, PDX) that are cheap with a ton of food. There are others that try to be fancy and charge you 3 times the amount for about the same amount of food, just different atmosphere. This place charged a lot of money. There are others that can get away with it (Mekada in New Brunswick, for one), but ease up on the cloves for the sake of all good things in the world. I know its in there, you don't have to choke me with it. We have obviously never returned.
Pros: * *
Cons: OVERPRICED * Too much CLOVES * |

• i was somewhat surprised to see this place listed on happycow. it is not especially vegan-friendly, at least not more so than other ethiopian or thai places that have a few things on the menu.. response by kindlizard

Review: Try the veggie sampler its fantastic. Such delicious food and so different. Waitresses are really nice and cater to vegan needs. Ethiopian fresh roasted coffee is amazing. They will even steam your soy/rice milk if you bring it. Lunch veggie combo is way cheaper than dinner.
Pros: great food * great service * hearty
Cons: not really any * * |

Review: What a great date place.... if you are into your date you can share an Ethiopian flat "bread" covered in an array of vegan dishes that you dig into with your hands by ripping apart pieces of flat breads and grabbing up some of each dish. You can get a veggie sampler for two. The vegan options are about as extensive as the meat. I've turned a lot of people onto this restaurant and they bring their dates there and children there when they want to bond. Desserts are delicious (yes... vegan) and TRY THEIR HOMEMADE COFFEE!!!! They roast the beans while you wait and grind it up and it is a delicious coffee experience. (you have to ask for it early on because it takes a while) If you never thought you would like collard greens or tried them once and weren't sure, they will make you fall in love. BYOB.
Pros: Excellent and friendly * Intimacy of sharing food with hands * Lots of food!
Cons: Must like eating with hands * Sometimes busy * |

• It seems you are more impressed by the novelty of eating with your hands and Ethiopian food in general. I strongly encourage you to try other places that are sincerely superior in quality. The novelty will change for you.
also, the bread is called injera, and it is made from teff, the smallest grain. Teff has been found in the pyramids and fossils dating far back. Pretty amazing stuff.. response by kindlizard
