Review: I go there when I want hot, mushy food and salad and comfort. Everyone there is so friendly and Tuesdays and Thursdays are primarily vegan. The usual Maitre'd (Sudarshana) is very warm and welcoming and always has a joke to share.
Pros: outside seating available * choice of fresh raw or super-cooked food * Mostly gluten-free and vegan options
Cons: buffet self-control must be excersized * * |

Review: The food was very wholesome and everything but the main entree and one of the dressings was vegan. Very home-cooked taste to it. Nothing was spicy, and only reminiscent of Indian cooking for the most part. It was a great experience aside from the fact that random people would stop and ramble on about their experiences with Krishna and George Harrison while I was trying to eat. Will definitely go back.
Pros: Mostly vegan * Affordable * Interesting atmosphere
Cons: Preaching patrons * Salad bar was a bit bland * |

Review: Govinda's Buffet has been a popular place to dine for decades while other veg restaurants come and go. The food tends to be good and wholesome at a moderate fixed price. You pay for a meal and then fill your own tray. It's operated by Krishna devotees adjacent to the temple located along a one-way street in a neighborhood of residential homes. Typically, one cook will be in charge for years before there is a turnover, so quality may vary slightly. I have always loved the soups, dahl, rice and curries at Govinda's. There is also a main course that changes daily and can be mighty good. Being pretty much vegan, I normally avoid dairy elsewhere but make exceptions here since many delicious items contain ghee (purified butter) including some of the main dishes and the puri (bread). No eggs are used. Many of the menu items are India-influenced although most of the devotees are American born with some exceptions. The atmosphere is generally peaceful, happy and unpretentious, very small (about ten tables indoors plus patio) with Krishna devotional music piped in softly at all times. Certain devotees working at Govinda's have slaved hard and silently for years with little or no compensation, on a mission to keep prasadam flowing. Prasadam, or "prasad" for short, is food offered up to God (aka Krishna) in celebration of Krishna's pastimes and traditions on Earth. This is expressed in the art hanging from walls and devotees are constantly chanting as they work. Otherwise if you're not familiar with the Krishnas, do not expect to be proseletyzed. The devotees are extremely friendly and easy going. Likewise, the patrons tend to be a wide mix of alternative community, almost all vegetarians, a variety of artisans, a few people from India and many congregation members. The age spectrum is wide. During warm weather, the outdoor wood deck patio is a great spot to eat and socialize. The Krishna philosophy recognizes the "Supersoul" in all living beings and abhors the slaughter of animals. Govinda's is thus more than veg food, it's an infusion of devotional goodness prepared in the yoke of love against the ubiquitous violence represented in the larger world where flesh is simply material in a material consciousness. By definition, prasad is infused with the presence of God much the same as in other sacred belief systems. Ten meal discount cards are available for budget minded diners. Govinda's is an enduring and endearing tradition and a personal favorite. Free on Sundays.
Pros: A good square deal * All you can devour * Prasadam pro card
Cons: Only one Denver location * Not in every city * Can get crowded |
