The title above says almost everything. Its a real oasis within the most conservative bio-sustentainable surrounding you can imagine. Vauban the former french military quarter of Freiburg has become the centre of ecological architecture in Germany. Tourists come here to visit and the middle class is buying apartments before they were built. There has been a "Wagenburg" (place for alternative living in trailers) which was removed by the police, because the neighbours could not stand the colourful anarcic live on the way to their offices...
So S.U.S.I. project is the last remaining place of this movement and still has one or two trailers on its territory. And it has the marvelous Susi-Cafe, which I visited twice last year for lunch time. A friend introduced it to me and explained how it works. If you are a member you pay 3€, if you are not you pay 5€ and this is what you get: a daily changing vegan menu with salad/soup, main dish and dessert which you can repeat as many times you want, water included. When I first visited they had a delicious quiche and on the second day I got surprised with a vegan "feijoada" (traditional brazilian dish). The place is totally familiar and friends of the project come here for lunch, anyhow I was very warm wellcomed and the guy at the desk spoke english, spanish and a even a little portuguese. espresso afterwards was 1,5€ and delicious. I imediately wrote an entry on our brazilian blog, where you can find pictures as well: http://vegberlin.com/2012/09/28/s-u-s-i if you go to Freiburg, dont miss it!
