Review: This is no longer a vegetarian restaurant, as it now serves fish. I rang the place to check this information, and the person on the phone was EXTREMELY rude and asked me to hang up when I said I was desapointed that they now served fish. I invite all vegetarians and vegans to stop going to this place, as a form of protest against they serving fish.

Cons: serves fish * are very rude * |

Review: Wow! Our most expensive dining experience in Paris, beating both Le Potager du Marais & La Victore Supreme du Couer.
Our dining experience started with falafel entree (that tasted strangely similar to my mother's tuna patties) and a couple of novelty overpriced beverages. For our main meals we had the macrobiotic plate and a tofu casserole. The macrobiotic plate consisted of overcooked tasteless vegetables, undercooked brown rice, canned tomato sauce, weird fried soy cakes and a mountain of plain soaked arame seaweed dumped in the middle of the plate. Nothing really seemed macrobiotic other than the idea of arranging these foods on a plate and labelling them as such. The casserole was much of the same nothingness arranged and named according to it's apparent likeness.
In conclusion, the dishes served to us were nothing more than the kind of food that a 12 year old kid with some good ideas could prepare in the family kitchen.

Cons: Overpriced * Devitalised food * Uninspiring meals |

Review: I was there two years ago, so I can't recall specifically what I ate for dinner, but it was delicious. With all the wonderful things on the menu it was hard to decide. The restaurant was small, but friendly. It was hard to find because the street it's on seems to be only one block long, but it was fun searching (and around the corner we saw some work/graffiti by Space Invader, in case anyone is familiar). I can't wait to return to Paris to eat there again.
Pros: good menu * delicious food *

Review: the food, atmosphere and service were all fine - no real complaint, but nothing knocked my socks off. i'm a vegan traveling with a non-vegan spouse, and we visited here for dinner one night when it was "my turn" to pick a restaurant. we both had fine meals - and it was nice for me to have options of balanced meals on which to fill up. would i be a regular, no, simply because the food didn't match up to the price. also, while he can truly appreciate a good veg. restaurant, here my spouse enjoyed the bread most of all...
i'd only go back if, after trying a number of the other veg restaurant options in town, this place holds its own.

Review: Fabulous place a stone's throw away from Notre Dame. Wonderful cosy setting with a rustic feel. Our group sat upstairs reached by means of a steep spirally staircase (possibly like the steps in Notre Dame itself perhaps). The food choice is very good, and strong for vegans. The portions are big and with dishes such as seitan cutlet, cassoulets, and tofu steaks. If you are vegetarian or vegan this place is an absolute must and even if you aren't it's worth a bash rather than suffering the hussle and bussle of restaurants in the neighbouring area where food is a function rather than an experience.

Review: The owner/ chef should take a trip to the UK - it's not far - and sample some real vegetarian food here. It's not often that I can eat in a restaurant and honestly believe that I could cook better, tastier, more interesting food at home, but in this case I know I could (and have). It was like stepping into a timewarp.
The vegetables were completely overcooked, to the point of disintegration, and the waiter was unhelpful. The restaurant was over-filled and there was precious little ventilation, on a very hot evening. Absolutely not recommended; vegetarians can eat far better (not to mention cheaper) at non-veggie restaurants, and I would recommend a take-away sandwich over this place.
I am apparently allowed to rate a minimum of 'two cows' because this restaurant is 100% vegetarian. Ridiculous; it deserves one 'cow', if that.
Pros: probably fairly healthy * *
Cons: over-priced * food badly cooked * overcrowded |

Review: We found this great little restaurant after visiting Notre Dame. We had a wonderful lunch while sitting outside. My husband, two daughters (ages 9 and 11) and myself enjoyed a variety of Vegan dishes and beverages. The soup was one of our favorites!!! We were so pleased we can't wait to go back!!! Not cheep, but well worth it. Enjoy.

Review: first of all, the staff was super friendly! we ate outside, but great ambiance inside also, very clean. diverse menu, including beverages such as the fresh-squeezed veggie juice. not cheap, but fair value considering the quality. the berber plate was HUGE. and as another reviewer commented, the best part of this place is that you don't feel you're compromising your paris experience by eating vegetarian. it's right near notre dame but on a quiet side street, not too touristy at all. can't wait to go back and try more on the menu! (by the way, besides cheese, i didn't see any animal products on the menu, not sure what makes it non-vegetarian?)

Review: Le Grenier is my favorite restaurant in the world. The food can swing from excellent to mediocre but what I love about the restaurant is that it is a French restaurant first and a veg friendly restaurant second. When you visit Paris as a vegan, it is easy to feel that you are missing the oh so important food experience. Le Grenier always makes me feel as though I have had the food experience. It is clean, the staff is wonderful and ambiance is bistro like. I first visited in 1999 and have only seen it improve. They have a second location nearby that I have yet to visit. Earlier this month I had dinner there 3 of my 5 nights in the city.
Pros: food * ambiance * location
Cons: more vegan deserts * * |

Review: the location is fantastic. you can't ask for anything better than a great meal in the shadows of notre dame - something that vegetarians can boast over carnivores in paris!
the food wasn't as brilliant as i was expecting, though that may have been more about the fantastic meal we had the previous night.
english isn't brilliant there, so if you aren't comfortable with ordering in french it may get a little tedious, but the menu is bilingual.
the food is a little more basic than the top places and the flavours were more run of the mill, but still a very good meal and a brilliant experience.
not sure what makes it non-vegetarian...looked pretty 100% veggie to me
Pros: location * food * atmosphere
Cons: price * * |

Review: Good value set menu for central Paris, 17.50 euros, with lots of choices, and a couple of delicious specials of the day. Organic wines were much cheaper than at our other favourite, Le Potager du Marais.
The location close to the Seine is great, but the place is too small downstairs, with a spiral stair to the upper floor, which we couldn't manage. So next time we'll book and ask for a table downstairs. I don't know where the toilets are, but I think they need the ability to manage stairs.
Pros: tasty * good value * good price wines
Cons: poor disability access * cramped * |

Review: Happened to be passing on our last evening and found this place yards from our hotel! It had plenty of seating upstairs, we had a very friendly waitor who was happy to explain things on the menu we weren't sure about. The homemade soup was delicious, and the sietan steak main course was very filling and tasty. The spaghetti main came up huge which my daughter struggled to finish. But we made room for pudding, which was the best we'd had from the veggy restuarants we'd visited in paris. With wine and beer it came to about 30-35 each which I thought was reasonable considering a) location right near Notre Dame, b) portion sizes c) its paris! Consider the same factors in another capital city and you realise it was a bargain. Would highly recommend.
Pros: portions large * friendly staff * varied menu
Cons: * * |

Review: First of all, please excuse my broken English. I am a French person and I feel obliged to warn you against that place. I myself had dinner at that restaurant and had a bad experience. The freshness of the vegetables in my lasagna was questionable, the dessert was taseless, the toilets were dirty. The owners of the "Grenier" don't care about their customers, for they know that most of them are foreign tourists who won't come back to their place anyway. I absolutely do not recommend that restaurant. If you're a vegetarian, there are plenty of other options, near the rue Mouffetard in the same district, you have "Les 5 saveurs d'Anada". If you're near the Louvre, you may try "La Victoire Suprźme du Coeur", which has become a bit pricey, but you will have a good experience. If you're a vegan, you may go to "Saveur Veget'halles", which is near the Louvre, it's the only vegan restaurant in Paris. Those restaurants have web sites if you need more information. Voilą! And enjoy your trip to Paris!

Review: We visited on the 30th anniversary of this restaurant. There was no problem at all in selecting vegan dishes. The menu detailed the ingredients of the choices in both French and English and indicated whether the item was vegetarian or vegan. Next to each item there was also a photograph of the dish concerned, which was helpful. But, be warned: the servings are much bigger than they appear in the photographs. We visited this restaurant twice: for an evening meal and for lunch the following day. On both occasions the food was excellent, the service helpful and the cost reasonable. We were very worried that we would not be able to find a decent vegan restaurant in Paris, but Le Grenier de Notre Dame was a fantastic find.
Pros: Excellent food * good value * friendly service
Cons: small room (seats 12) * only open for lunch and dinner * |

Review: I wasn't sure what to expect when checking this place out. The reviews here at Happy Cow are diverse. Personally, I've had some top quality vegetarian food, and I thought this place was great. The service was really nice and helpful with me...something that is rare in France. If there are servers that are rude, though, then that wouldn't be a draw-back, as 'good' service is a non-French cultural expectation, and one isn't likely to find it much in France anywhere (at least in my experience after living here for 5 years). The banana-chocolate-caramel mouse wasn't good, but the pumpkin soup and main courses we got were great. One also gets a LOT of food. We couldn't finish it all. The prices for a regular plate are between 14-19 euros, depending...and frankly...that is normal for Paris which has a very high cost in restaurants unless one hits a crap cafe. I recommend this place.
Pros: Diverse selection * Nice atmostphere * heart of Paris
Cons: Vegan options too * * |

Review: As a family (2 adults and 2 teenage daughters) who like to holiday in France, we have so often struggled to find something to eat. On one occasion we were served 'vegetarian' pizza with generous slabs of bacon on top. It comes as a relief to find somewhere that we all like, which is central and serves tasty food. The menu is varied, the service is good. We all liked the laid back and very friendly waiter. The place was busy but not too rushed. We will definitely go back and I would have no hesitation in recommending it to any other vegetarians or anyone else for that matter. Go and try it.

Review: Are there a lack of chefs interested in the cooking possibility's and creative aspects of vegetarian food in Paris? There certainly isn't a chef working at Le Grenier De Notre Dame but the prices would suggest there was. The food we were served here was truly awful, a lasagna and paella (which took our waiter 10 mins to cook in the microwave). The paella (15 Euro)was a bland plate of rice interspersed with a couple of cashews and the odd diced vegetable. My lasagna(15.95 Euro) was small with over cooked pasta at the bottom of a dish topped with a bit of sauce a bit of cheese and some over cooked veg but worst of all it smelt off! I politely pointed this out to the owner who told me it had been cooked fresh that day and would I like some more cheese on it!... no it was off! After a verbal tussle with the rude owner who insisted angrily that we would have to pay for the food and then decided he couldn't speak English ,we paid for our drinks and left.We were so pleased to come across the moaz falafal just round the corner, phew clean tasting and fresh.
The best food we had in Paris was in little bistro on cherche midi, not a vegetarian place but serving some delicious vegetarian courses cooked by someone who loves food and cheaper than Le Grenier

Review: This laid-back place (which I may have reviewed before) seems to be open most of the time, and I have never needed to book (but having said that phoning ahead wouldn't be a bad idea!). The food is fairly plain but is well-prepared. They now mark vegan dishes on the menu, and there are quite a few, but a word of warning: tell them if you're vegan, otherwise you may get non-vegan dressing on the salad accompanying your otherwise vegan meal. (This happened to me and they removed it, more or less, with a good grace.)
By the way I don't know why this is designated a non-vegetarian restaurant on HappyCow because they don't serve anything non-vegetarian as far as I know - certainly no fish was in evidence.

Cons: Not haute cuisine * * |

Review: This was the first vege restaurant I went to in Paris. I choose it because it was mentioned alot in guide books and internet sites I had been on before I went. It was easy to find, if you cross the bridge by Notre Dame catheral carry straight on passed the cafe on the corner and it is on the first back street on the left. We went for it opening just after 6:30pm. There are loads of tables compared to other places over two floors so i dont think you would have a problem getting in. It was nice inside, would be suitable for a romantic meal. There is plenty of choice, I had paella which was a bit bland but my friend had the lasagne which looked nice. The bill came to 58euros for the two of us-we had a main, dessert & 2 drinks. The food was good not amazing but to be honest I was just glad to find a vege restaurant at all in Paris. I would give this one a go, its a nice little restuarant in a good location. The next day we went to Le Potager du marais which put this one in the shade.
Pros: Non smoking * Plenty of choice *
Cons: Food lacked something * * |

Review: I can't see how this place can have a fan club, but its not all that and wouldn't survive a day if not for it's location. I still have photos of my meal there. (yes I'm a weird vegan that takes pictures of his food, well if its good I often eat it before remembering to snap a pic) The funniest thing I ordered was this vegan jello (agar agar) deal that probably tasted close to the taste of a car tire. There are far better veg places to eat in Paris, so skip this one unless you find yourself at Notra Dame tired and starving. Other than the bland food, its a neat little restaurant.

Review: This is the place my wife and I go to every time We are in Paris, We love this place, the food is good, with a more home made type of flavors, the owner and the server are great, this is our place away from home,.
By the way who ever wrote that they serve fish was mistaken.
Also I would like to add to all the people that wrote that the food is bad:
My wife and I were ( and always go to one of this restaurants when we are in a particular city)to Alain Ducasse both in Paris and Monte Carlo, we've been to Robuchon, Arpege,French Laundry Etc, all the major restaurants of the world and the chefs in those restaurants always make incredible meals for us, dishes that are incredible, always making sure that they don't use animal products and they pull it of incredibly,
Having said this when you go to a restaurant like Le Grenier de Notre Dame you are not expecting a 4 star michelin chef to prepare you a meal, this place is a cozy home style vegan/vegetarian restaurant where you don't have to ask or call in advance so the chef can prepare a menu without animal products, so to " bitch " about this place is plain snooty and pretentious, this place is exactly what is suppose to be.
Pros: excellent food * friendly staff * just right

Review: My first visit to this place was over 15 years ago and I remember it being expensive but quite nice. I have been 3 times this year and each time it was expensive and the food was very mediocre in the quality of the cooking and the taste. The couscous I have tried twice (to try and give them the benefit of the doubt) and the last time it just had to go back, virtually inedible through lack of flavour. It came back just spicy and bitter. I feel it the owner rests on it's central location and I can honestly say (I am 46 and have eaten in hundreds of veggie places) that a little trip to the less central veggie establishments will be worth it.

Review: My husband and I have been vegetarian for over 30 years and have eaten memorable meals in some of the best restaurants in the US and Europe. We have found consistently better food at non-vegetarian places, and Le Grenier is no exception. Our experience there was frustrating and disappointing. The food would have passed muster 25 years ago, but the world and vegetarian cuisine have all moved beyond the menu here. You don't have to put up with this kind of mediocrity, especially in Paris. The food was vastly overpriced and the service bordered on rude. The best thing I can say about it is that the wine was good and reasonably priced and the kir was one of the best I've ever had. Other than that, we ended up wishing we'd gone to a falafel stand.

Review: This is the 4th time I have been and this year, in June, it had been re-decorated, without losing its ambience. It really is a very nice restauarant and, in my experience, it is just about the best you can get in Paris, which is not as good as in many other cities. The staff are always friendly and can speak English and there is plenty of choice for vegans. In the Happy Cow list, it is described as not being 100% vegetarian but I have never seen anything non-vegetarian on a menu there. If you have only one night in Paris, go to Le Grenier and you can stroll around Notre Dame afterwards and maybe even take a look at the famous Shakespeare and Co bookshop, which is around the corner.
Pros: Choice * Ambience * Vegan friendly
Cons: Not the cheapest * * |

Review: We visited for dinner in March 2007. The place is very small, and had a cosy, comfortable atmosphere. Our waiter did not speak English, but he was very patient with our poor effort at speaking French, so communication was not a major problem. The food in general was very nice, but not amazing. The lasagne was average. We did enjoy our visit but for the price one might expect more.
Pros: Friendly, patient staff * Cosy atmosphere *
Cons: Expensive * * |

Review: I've been visiting this place for over 10 years now and have never been dissapointed. The food is a veg*n versions of standard french peasant food and emphasis is on rustic with big flavours in baked dishes. Couldn't be in a better location for tourists and the waiters have always been very pleasant and efficient and very practised dealing with tourists in english. Booking a table downstairs is essential as the tables upstairs are a bit cramped (as is all of Paris it seems!). Prices are the same as my favourite veg restaurants in London. Looking forward to my next visit!
Pros: big menu * great location * good wine list
Cons: * * |

Review: My first thoughts on Le Grenier was its size, they seemed to have crammed as many tables in a physically possible. Even though we went at a fairly quiet time I could imagine that if it was busy you would almost be sat on your neighbours knee!! There was nothing particularly amazing on the menu although the portion sizes weren't bad - the large bottle of wine was appreciated! The young waiter was very sullen and didn't speak any english although the person I assume was the head waiter or manager helped us out a little. Thie restaurant was a little pricey for the quality of food. As a vegan I find myself happy with just about anywhere that I can get food but if comparing this to regular restaurants I wouldn't have been particularly impressed. As far as vegan friendly restaurants go it was ok.
Pros: Large bottle of wine * Number of vegan options *
Cons: Miserable staff * Crammed in * Too pricey |

Review: visited in evening - nice atmosphere and great location. Usual Bland French Veggie Food - stange combinations - also overpriced and couple of dishes where overcooked. It was more like 'daytime cafe 1970s style' than evening restaraunt food. Reasonable sized portions. My partner and I enjoyed the evening until the waiter made a very inappropriate (which was not a joke/flirt) proposition - avoid if single female or female couple - made us very uncomfortable as he was unfriendly once turned down!!. Spoiled our romantic Paris evening totally. However hard to say what other staff would be like.
Pros: Location and Atmoshere * Good Portions *
Cons: Price and Staff * Food Bland * |

Review: Very disappointed with this one. Tried both lunch and dinner there on two different days hoping the disappointing lunch was just a fluke. It wasn't. Food was quite greasy and overcooked both times. The veggies were boiled into tastelessness and there was hardly any seasoning on anything. It's more expensive than both Le Potager du Marais & La Victiore Supreme du Couer but the food was quite inferior to both of those places. Can't say I'd recommend it.
Pros: Large menu selection * *
Cons: Overcooked, greasy food * Overpriced * |

Review: The location is great, right in the center of Paris. The food was very good, if not that special. If you are in the area, this is fine place to stop by.
Pros: heatlhy * location *
Cons: a bit bland * * |
