When I say this place is tiny, I mean you better hope no one else is eating when you get there or you won't get a table. Order at the counter and keep moving as the food is wrapped to go. Very clean. Friendly woman behind the counter. The falafel was outstanding. Even our carnivore guided loved the food.
Pros: clean, fresh food, good locationYou may associate falafel with middle east and expect to find it as a local staple food in Turkey, but make no mistake, falafel is basically unknown food in this country, especially in the western part. So it has been these type of newly emerging cafes that have been introducing falafel to Istanbul.
If you are used to having falafel in Lebanese or Syrian places, this cafe will surprise you a little bit. The first thing you will notice when you enter that place is that the place is basically spotless. The guy who makes the falafels wears plastic gloves and uses different tools for each food item. He carefully places tomatoes and uses a plastic spatula to spread hummus perfectly around the tortilla bread. Compared to your local labanese guy who puts everything together in thirty seconds and serves your wrap with his bare hands, this will be a different experience. It even made me question that having prepared that carefully if it would taste anything at all. But in fact, it did, it was not the best falafel I ever had and it was a bit dry, but I got a decent falafel and I was happy to be full.
Try the place if you are already around, but probably it is not worth to travel just for that.
Kikero is a new little falafel shop just off the main street going past Galata tower in Istanbul. It's located on a quiet laneway near the upper end of the hill.
The main item on offer is a falafel wrap or sandwich (actually pita bread) with salad. Also you can order just falafels with tahini, special toast (cheese and tomato), or an interesting Tunisian dessert called Assida.
The falafels are pretty good, and the wrap with salad, falafels and dressing is quite tasty and good value for 7TL.
The only thing I would like here perhaps is more hummus or something like that to fill out the flavour a bit more. They do add some tahin sauce however. You can have a tea with your falafel for just 1 TL extra.
The assida dessert is unusual and not Turkish as I first though, but a Tunisian inspired hazelnut and dairy type of pudding. Really worth trying at least once if you're not vegan, and especially if you like hazelnuts :)
One other aspect worth mentioning is the cleanliness of the place, it's apparent when you walk in that the owners take a lot of care in this regard.
There is some limited seating inside and just outside, it's a bit restricted but does the job. Definitely worth a stop if you are in the area and need a quick falafel fix :)
Pros: All vegetarian, Impressively hygienic, Nice location
