Review: Surely a bit expensive. Average meal with a single dish will cost you 5-6 dollors. Thus a bit costly for the backpacker traveller.Food was good. Menu has a lot of choice. Place has good decor and nice Chinese Caligraphy on its walls. Opens early but closes at 10pm. Staffs understand english well. As I dont eat eggs, they took care to prepare a certain dish "egg free" for me, which was described "with egg" in the menu. Lot of foreign guests are there. Location is good, quite close to the Hoan Kiem or Sword Lake. Overall experience good.
Pros: lot of variety to choose * *
Cons: costly * * |

Review: The reviews I read on here before dining @ Tamarind Cafe were right on -- its expensive by local standards, but worth treating yourself to. I didn't think the smoothies were very good, but the food was delicious and there are so many choices that it's hard not to order a few different things. I particularly liked the teriyaki tofu sandwich. There is also a travel agency inside and new massage place upstairs that is open til 10 pm, 100,000 dong for 30 mins. Would definitely recommend this place during your visit to Hanoi.
Pros: Extensive Menu * Central location * Nice ambiance
Cons: Expensive * * |

Review: There's no getting away from the fact that this restaurant is expensive but it is worth it for the quality and choice. We arrived in Hanoi having not had lunch that day and had a two course blow out at Tamarind - it cost us the equivalent of 332,000 dong (without any drinks) by far the most we have spent on a meal in our 4 weeks in Vietnam but it was all delicious. I particularly liked the eggplant and beancurd hotpot - I'm sure this would satisfy any meat eating friends needing persuasion on the tastes of veggie food. I also appreciated the magazines and books that were available for reading, a nice touch I haven't seen in that many cafes in Vietnam.
Pros: Delicious food * Extensive menu * Clean and attractive
Cons: Very expensive * * |

Review: I ate here several times in July '08 & it was good. Nice ambience & staff & good food. Prices in USD didn't bother me, esp when I ate there my first day in Vietnam & was still totally confused by the dong exchange rate. Yes it is aimed at westerners & that can be a good thing. Sometimes it's nice to have a place that is more like what you are used to at home. Same as Asian people eating at Asian restaurants when they visit western countries.
Good luck to them.

Review: I am not a vegetarian, but I want to create the most flavorful vegetarian gourmet for all diners, anyone who appreciates good taste in food, in ambiance, and in service. Thanks to my amazing appetite and my background, I have tried eating the best food (in terms of flavors & quality) around the globe for the last 20 years. Being raised in a Taiwanese merchant's family(regular business dinner & banquets), lived in the US, worked in the fashion industry between Japan & Europe, and now based in the international gourmet city Bangkok, I have been fortunate enough to be explored to the best quality Chinese & other cuisines. At the end, I and my also well-traveled vegetarian business partner Sylvie, put together all the popular dishes from the places we visited in a meatless way. i want to share my pleasure eating tasty & quality food with my customers. That was why Tamarind Cafe was created to be better than others, and to cater to those who enjoy quality and a hassle-free experience in Hanoi. We train and pay our staff well, and have sent several young staff through universities. Many of them have been happily working with us for years, if not from the beginning of the business. The rents for both decent lodgings and commercial premises in Vietnam have increased markedly since 2000 and quality doesn't come cheap. To maintain a well-trained team of employees, a clean open kitchen, comfortable dining environment and most importantly, a well-prepared, innovative & health-conscious world vegetarian menu takes a significant investment in money and efforts. But seeing more and more carnivors enjoy eating vegetarian and vegetarians indulge themselves in our safe culinary heaven, we are proud to have created the Tamarind Cafe. Written by co-owner Luka
Pros: One of the Kind Gourmet * Cozy & Relaxing Ambiance * Helpful Staff
Cons: Not cheap enough for budget travelers * Smoking still available for one section * |

Review: The reviews so far seem to be right on the mark. This place is very nicely decorated, air conditioned, comfortable, and has a huge menu. If this restaurant was in the US or Europe, it would be a perfectly good veggie restaurant with reasonable prices. However, for Vietnam, the prices are astronomical, and I agree completely with a previous reviewer that putting the prices in USD is absolutely absurd. Bottom line... this is a great place to go if you're European or American and want to feel like (and pay like) you're at home for an evening. The food is perfectly fine. However, you can pay 1/4 the price and get better food (and beer!) at dozens of other places.
Pros: Big menu * Comfortable *
Cons: Not local * Doesn't put prices in local currency * Expensive |
