Not impressed

2 Posted on 06 / 19 / 2011

I have been to the bagelry on a prior visit to Santa Cruz but this was my first visit after switching to a vegan diet. I ordered the tofu-Tom on a toasted whole wheat bagel and was not impressed. The bagel was not as good as the bagel chain up the street and there was enough tofu sun dried tomato spread piled on top to cover 6 bagels. Pretty sad for a Sunday breakfast.

Pros: Selection
Cons: Taste

When I lived in Santa Cruz I ate here probably 2 to 4 times a week. It's quick and easy, even when the line is out the door(sat & sun mornings btwn 10am and noon). Vegetarians can have everything on the menu except the lox and tuna. Vegans can have just about everything else.
A standard for me is The Cruz, a bagel(I usually go sesame)toasted and topped with ths in shop tofu-tom spread, sliced tomatos and sprouts for about $4. Other vegan spread options include tofutti cream cheese, tofutti herb cream cheese, in house tofu del fuego, plus almond and peanut butters, in house hummus, and assorted jams and jellies. Veggie selections run the gamut from pickles to tomatos to cucumber to mushrooms, and everything in between. Many of them organic.
Nice selection of in cooler juices and smoothies, many organic. Vegan include and almond milk smoothie, and chocolate and vanilla soy smoothies. Good seating options in and outside, all wheelchair accessible. Interior atr displays, a great outdoor bulletin board, interior walls covered with concert and event ads, and a great selection of local weeklies and magazines / papers for reading.
Large college and downtown crowd, smattered with tourists and highschool kids. Good atmospehere.

Pros: Tasty, affordable., Great atmosphere., Nice selection.
Cons: serves lox and tuna.
