Review: I fully echo what was said in the 9/14/09 review. My husband and I had a great vegan meal here for an incredibly low price. New owner Ben is running this place solo and doing an amazing job. We had a full plate of delicious food, including local organic veggies, for something like 5 bucks! Meanwhile, people who were used to the previous owners were so distraught that there is no longer a buffet, that they were giving Ben a hard time and walking out. He was incredibly patient, explaining that the buffet would waste too much food. We had the daily lunch special and the pizza (with great house-made "cheese"). We wish we had a Little Lad's near us.
Pros: amazing value * herbal popcorn * delicious
Cons: abusive customers * tired decor * |

Review: 2009 visit to Portland...we found this cute spot for VEGAN food on this web site. We had a very good meal here with large portions for a great price. We met Ben, the new owner/manager. He is an enthusiastic and charming young man who is committed to doing a great job. While we were dining we overheard a young woman asking if she had to pay for her meal, and also a man getting food to go who was talking on his cell phone to a friend explaining there was new management in the restaurant and he couldnt do something. Apparently, the folks previously running the place (over)generously gave away food. Now, previous customers, some who are fully capable of paying for their meals, return thinking they can eat for free to find new management requires them to pay. Come on folks, GET REAL!
Please support this restaurant! It is awesome to find good VEGAN food available but it can't be done for free! Let's support the new management all we can, with what we can - OUR MONEY! I hope to visit Portland again in the future and sincerely hope this restaurant is there when I do.
Pros: Ben * good food * great popcorn

Review: Little Lads is a fun place, cheap food, 100% vegan. Their mac and cheese is great. I don't go there very often because the food is never fresh. I think it's all shipped in frozen and heated up or something, because it's always mushy, no matter what it is. I loved it a lot more before I got better at cooking great vegan food at home, but it's a good option if you are a vegan working in the area. Their herbal popcorn is great, I buy it at Whole Foods often. It's the only thing of theirs that tastes fresh.
Pros: cheap * vegan * popcorn/mac & cheese
Cons: mushy/not fresh * hardly ever have mac & cheese * horrible hours |

Review: I've been buying Little Lads granola, popcorn, and tarts for years. When I finally had a chance to visit the restaurant in Portland, I was absolutely ecstatic. From the moment I walked it, I was greeted with friendly and courteous staff. The buffet was overflowing with delicious eats: rutabaga, lentil pie, cashew pilaf, herbed carrots, "Mainestrone" soup. At $3.99 for a plate and bowlful and just $1 extra for seconds, you can't beat the price! If you are ever in the neighborhood, make sure to drop by, and pick up some of their delicious cookies, fudge, pies, and tarts while you are there!

Review: The ambiance is as casual/low-key as it gets, but the food is wonderful. The chik'n salad melt made with their own TVP and potato-based cheeze is unbelievable. There's a great all you can eat buffet and the other menu items (sandwiches, etc) come with a side of delicious herbed popcorn. It's right in the middle of Monument Square and easy to get to from anywhere in Portland. For traveling vegans in the Portland area, you won't be sorry if you make a side trip to Little Lad's.
