Review: We've been to The Green House three times now and it never disappoints. The menu changes subtly over time, hopefully through guest feedback and seasonal availability.
One of the best comments I can make is we've taken non veggie/vegan people there and they've loved it. You'll never win over the myopic, but any food lover will be more than happy with what they are served at The Green House.
The following is a *constructive* critical review of the food so don't see it as negative - I recommend this restaurant without hesitation.
Starter: Veg Kebab
Very tasty though the kebabs themselves a little on the small side. When it arrived in front of me I thought they'd sent out the wrong dish as when I saw \"veg kebab\" I rather expected something more substantial; then maybe I'm a bit more on the rustic side of cooking. The accompanying walnut, pinenut and miso dip was a tad on the salty side and rather outweighed/overpowered the kebab.
Main: Aduki Bean and Pumpkin Refritos
The beans were cooked perfectly, with just the right level of spice. Maybe it's me but I missed the pumpkin element; possibly overpowered. The dish was slightly dry and would have been aided by some sort of moisture, maybe a soya yoghurt raitha or some veggie equivalent of sour cream.
Dessert: Apple Pie
Always a delight. A struggle to eat a third course... but then pudding does go in a different hole! '-) Wonderful to see three vegan options on the dessert menu; so often that's where veggie restaurants can fall down.
Do yourself a favour and visit this restaurant, but do so during the week as in my experience the attention to detail can (understandably) tail off a little when they're really busy (eg Friday/Saturday nights).
Pros: Excellent VEGAN food * Great atmosphere/music * Friendly Staff
Cons: Occassional lack of attention to detail * * |

Review: I was so excited to discover there was another vegi restaurant in the barren-vegi'land of Herts, and i wasn't disappointed.
The place itself is a lot bigger than it looks from the outside, it's actually on 3 floors. The decor is light and natural, using both wicker and wood and the main dining area has a large glass conservatory roof so there is plenty of natural light and a feeling of space.
My friend (non-vegi) and I (vegan) had a 3 course meal full of colour and flavour. The menu changed with the seasons and every dish sounded intriguing and flavourful, with a vegan option for virtually every dish. I finally chose to have a starter of sweetcorn and lentil soup that came with some fresh wholemeal bread and vegan butter, followed by pumpkin and pinenut risotto. My friend also had the soup, and then chose an aduki bean..sort of patty(!) with brazil mash and multicoloured coleslaw.
It really was all very very tasty, the soup was souperb ;0)and the risotto was perfectly cooked. I tasted my friend's main course and it was yummy, although i'm not sure his palette is used to the texture of beans quite as much as us vegi/vegans.
After a short breather we both opted for some date and walnut vegan ice cream, vanilla for him and strawberry for me. It was light and fruity but not in-ya-face-fruity!! You could taste the ingredients aside from the flavour...and i liked that, even though it was a taste I wasn't used to.
Drinks-wise, we ordered a Hemp beer - that had a scratch n'sniff panel! And with coffee came 2 little vegan chocolates.
There really isn't anything to complain about with this little gem of a restaurant. Aside from the scrummy food, the waitress was very helpful and attentive, and a 3 course meal with a mint tea only cost about #20. I can't wait to return again and sample some of the other delights on the menu.
Pros: Delicious food * Loads of vegan options * Lovely staff
Cons: NONE! * * |
