Review: Was just here in August 2009. Had been here several times before, the first being when J's Kitchen had just opened in December 2008. I am now updating my review on HappyCow.net.
From the beginning I was excited about the promise and the potential of J's Kitchen. Afterall, how can I resist organic, vegan, and wholesome? Well, it turns out that instead of becoming better, it's has gotten worse over time. I hate to write a bad review about any pure vegetarian restaurant, but I want to be honest here!
In the earlier days, the food was decent/good, and the prices fair. But the atmosphere was always lacking, and it's still looking like a work-in-progress. Each time I had gone back, they would change the space a bit, try to add or take away something. The price of the deli food used to be a fair 8.99 per pound. When I returned this time (Aug 09), it had jumped to being 12.75 per pound, which is outrageous for deli style food.
While the deli items are usually tasty, the sandwiches are a hit or miss. This time back, I had gotten a seitan teriayki sandwich, and it was average and outrageous priced, at 10.75 for some seitan chunks, lettuce, a few thin slices of cucumbers put together between 2 small slices of whole wheat bread. A more fair price should be 8.00 at the most.
This place is run like it's someone's house. The owner's son, J, after whom the cafe is named, runs around the little place wildly, climbing up and down the counters and making noises. Instead of trying to serve the customers, the woman behind the counter is trying to babysit the boy. Also, I watched the owner eat food while standing in the kitchen (which seems to be a violation of health department code, according to my friend who is owns a restaurant himself). It seems like they either have no clue as to how a restaurant should be properly managed, or they just don't care.
What a shame! I keep giving them chances, but I think this was the last time unless something drastic happens in a good way. Wish them better.
Pros: some food items tasty * organic & vegan * Abbot Kinney location
Cons: some items prices too high * poor management * hodge podge atmosphere |

Review: I had a really wonderful BLT. J's has a happy atmosphere and some great menu items. What really jumped out at me where their breakfast options! There is no inside seating as of, yet so they have 4 or 5 little 2 seater tables outside, which are nice to sit at and people watch on Abbot Kinney
Pros: 100% Vegan * Breakfast * BLT
Cons: no inside seating yet * * |
