Review: I have had the opportunity to eat at the asian rose (malabar) restaurant many times. Like all restaurants, there are a few things on the menu I do not care for, and there have been some nights where things are a bit off. However, 4 out 5 times this is a great place to eat. There are many selections, everything made fresh. There are many sauces, curries, and other dishes that can be served over rice. There is a delicious pan with garlic, and several appetizers such as the salad rolls that are unique.

If you are vegetarian, there is almost no way you will be unhappy, and normally you will be very happy here. I will go back again and again.

By the way, it is totally different for lunch than dinner. Lunch is cheap, quick, and has a lunch menu. Dinner is more expensive, and a whole different menu.

Ask for some tempeh la la on the side or as part of your dish, it is very good.

Pros: All vegetarian * huge vegan selection * many choices
Cons: some dishes better than others * *

Review: My wife and I went for lunch a few days ago and were pretty underwhelmed. We both ordered 2-curry plates so we had four different curries to try. One was a bit better than the others but all were pretty pedestrian -- IOW, none elicited a 'Wow, that's tasty' reaction.

Prices were decent and the ambience was OK (except for an dirty hanging-fabric accent in the rafters).

Our conclusion: it was fine for one lunch but we won't be returning.

Pros: Decent price * Good portions * Vegetarian
Cons: Food is only OK * *

Review: This is my favorite restaurant in Santa Cruz. It is an all vegetarian restaurant and 95% of all menu items can be prepared vegan. During the day time it is Asian Rose, which has more of a casual atmosphere and the prices are a bit lower. After 5pm it becomes Malabar (same building) and the food gets a little more fancy, meaning better presentation and more elite menu options. If you are looking for a healthy, vegan Indonesian food, this is a sure bet.

Pros: great food * mostly vegan * huge portions
Cons: limited hours * no alcohol * long lines

Review: Sri Lankan Food with a fine modern cuisine twist. I have been a loyal customer for a decade and love the menu. The new location is more spacious and a little more high end. One of the best vegetarian places in town.

Pros: excellent food * friendly staff * innovative menu
Cons: sometimes wait * *

Review: Last night at Malibar (Asian Rose) was a dream. We walked in and were greated by the owner as if we dined there every night. The truth is we live 325 miles away and dine there once or twice a year. He asked us if it was OK if he picked our dinner for us. He brought us the best meal I have ever had in any restaurant ever. Course after course was perfectly prepared and sinfully good. My parents, who dine there regularly, could not believe the treatment we received. The first course we had was the samosa. Wonderfully stuffed with Cashews and other delights, it was perfect. Next was the goat cheese salad, another perfection. We were then treated to a bread stuffed with raisons and almonds. All the while he was bringing us different special drinks to try. They have a coffee mocha drink which is the reason I am up at 4AM writing this. A sane person might have stopped eating at this point but out came three or four entrees and each one was better than the next. My personal favorite has always been the Steak Diane and this did not disappoint. We also had a tempeh dish that was quite delicious. After all this, we were brought a wonderful dessert with Mango, Pamagranite, Asian Pear, on a crust of fig and other good stuff.
I am grateful that my father decided to move to Santa Cruz years ago and introduced me to Malabar/Asian Rose. Last night's dinner was truly the best dinner I have ever had. In my home town of Tarzana resides Madeleine Bistro. It is almost impossible to top on of Dave's Special dinners but sorry Dave, Malabar did it.
Malabar is vegetarian/vegan and will serve vegan on request. Their new menu is filled with dozens of yummy choices. As far as I could understand, it is the Asian Rose at lunch time and Malabar at night. It gets crowded in the evenings, but its new larger home seems to be able to handle the crowd.
Whether you live in the area, or drive 325 miles like we do, they will make you feel right at home. Dinner usual costs between $12.50 and $20.00 per person.
The new location is roomier and more relaxed than the old place. There is room to move around. It is very comfortable. The staff is quite good.

Pros: Excellent Food * Huge Variety * Great Atmosphere
Cons: NONE * *
