We really wanted to like this place, especially because of the health focus, which fits with our philosophy on eating/food. The store looks very modern in a Western way from the outside - glass front with cool minimalist font near the door telling us about the integrity of the ingredients - not a bad start really, except that we could tell we were in for a menu full of eggs and dairy (which apparently are all organic and free range). I was also a little nervous about the reference to olive oil but was willing to go with it in the hope we may find a happy fusion between health and tradition.
The restaurant interior is lovely in a Western European kind of way. Bright and cheerful, artsy, clean and comfortable.
And then the menu. Happycow lists this place as serving "Thai and Western" food, in that order, so we expected to find some decent local fare. Unfortunately though the menu is mostly pasta, salads and sandwiches. We know better than to expect high quality Western food in Asia so prefer to avoid it - nothing here suggested a different approach would be justified.
We ended up ordering 2 curries - a hot and spicy one from Southern Thailand and another called Siamese Cassia Curry, which sounded different enough to feel quite interesting. We then got a tom yum soup, some deep fried angel mushrooms with tamarind sauce and another appetiser that involved veges being wrapped in leaves. In terms of local offerings, that was almost it.
The result... well, not great really. The cassia curry was burnt and tasted like charcoal, to the point where I couldn't bring myself to eat it [edit by staff]. If it wasn't for that it could have been nice, but hard to tell really. The hot & spicy curry tasted like tom yum soup without all the lovely spices, so not particularly enjoyable either. The upside was that it had lots of veges in it, so we ate those up and left most of the soup. The tom yum soup was nice but contained mock meat. Still, probably the best of the bunch. The mushroom appetiser was more like potato croquettes - in fact we think they got the order wrong, since the sauce didn't even remotely taste like tamarind and we were having trouble locating any mushrooms amidst the fried blobs of potato mush. They wouldn't admit any mix-up though, so we ate a few and left the rest. The leaf wraps were ok, but nothing to write home about.
We left puzzled why this place has such a fervent fanbase. Perhaps it's the ambience and the pasta..?Pros: lovely atmosphere, healthy ingredients, organics - always great to see!
Cons: mock meat, eggs, dairy, the menu and food, very little english
