Review: I just stumbled upon this article and felt I needed to update my review to warn others that are thinking about going here. Slimy black mold oozing out of the ice maker??? Rat feces throughout the place??? YUCK! http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2009/03/rogers-park-restaurant-closed-by-city.html

"City inspectors shut a well-known Rogers Park restaurant and bar today after finding health violations including oozing mold in an ice maker, a rodent infestation and too-warm food.

The Heartland Café, a popular natural foods restaurant that bills itself as "the Heart of Rogers Park," was closed after someone reported to Chicago's 311 non-emergency line that they had become sick after eating there, said city Health Department spokesman Tim Hadac."

Review: This place is very laid back. I ordered the Vegan tofu scramble, which was decent [a little dry, but still good]. It came with rice [over cooked] and a vegetable [I chose zucchini]. I wouldn't go out of my way to go here again, but for those of you that may want to try it, it's right off of the Red Line [Montrose?] stop, very convenient.

Review: but grab a bit to eat elsewhere.

The beer selection is great, and it is easy to find great gifts and decent stuff to read in the gift shop.

But if you are hungry, the quality-price ratio here is pretty poor. The menu is large and there are some vegetarian options. Unfortunately, there is very little to recommend here for vegans. Allow wide variability for cleanliness, presentation and service.

Pros: Good beers * Good reads * Good gifts
Cons: Food * Service * Value

Review: This was my first time here and although I have heard good things about this place I was not impressed. I ordered the black bean burger with a side of brown rice. The burger was extremely dry and bland (thank god for salsa)and I could have cooked better rice myself. Wait staff was nice but slow.

Pros: friendly waitstaff * *
Cons: bland food * slow service *

Review: This place is terrible if you are vegan.

Let me preface this story by saying we initially told the waitress we were vegan. My friend ordered the vegan buckwheat pancakes which were about 1/8\" thick and tasted like buckwheat mixed with water. They were so bad he took one bite and returned them to the waitress. I had the tofu scramble, which was not worth writing about and toast on the side. After ordering the \"vegan\" scramble with toast and \"vegan\" pancakes, the waitress asked if we wanted butter. I asked if the butter was vegan and she said no, like we were the weirdos in this situation. Why have vegan pancakes and no vegan butter? She brought out milk for our coffee. Again we asked if it was soymilk, nope.

We only live about 5 blocks away, but I will never ever go there again.

Cons: Useless staff * Food *
