Review: I'd never had home-cooked Japanese food until I went to Tanpopo. The warehouse/loft atmosphere, the smart decor and the extremely friendly service made Tanpopo feel more like an upscale cafe or diner than a Japanese restaurant. The menu is small, but offers simple, honest food like noodle soups and bento boxes, along with some sushi and tempura dishes. Prices are extremely low, as most vegan dishes are under $10 and extremely filling, particularly the noodle soups. Try their kitsune (fried tofu and vegetables) with udon or soba noodle, and make sure to specify you want the vegan mushroom broth. Portion sizes are large. For dessert, try their mochi, a sticky, subtly-sweet rice dumpling filled with red bean paste. Delicious. Tanpopo also has vegan sake and high-quality tea. This is a great place to take a date or just to fill up on simple, tasty, healthy Japanese food. It's open late, too, which is a nice bonus.
