Review: I went to Ruru in Fukuoka with my vegitarian boyfriend in February 2008. We called ahead to make a reservation (I speak basic Japanese so I don't know if the staff speak English here) and they were very helpful indeed. The place is out the way, so to find it easily go to the subway stop they advise and then get a taxi (I called the restaurant on my mobile phone and asked them to tell the driver the location directly, he had no problem finding it this way), I'm sure you can walk, but I didn't know the area so this seemed like the best option.
Staff were waiting outside to greet us and were very accomodating about our suitcases and bags (it was the last night of our visit together). They explained the menu to me in Japanese, we went for the set menu which was, undoubtedly, the best meal I have ever eaten.
When we sat down the waitress asked if we were vegan or just vegetarian, I've lived in Japan for three years and I have yet to meet another Japanese person who knew vegans even existed let alone the idea of them being different from vegetarians, this question filled me with confidence that the food was 100% vegetarian and the meal did not disappoint.
Every single dish was immaculately presented, the flavours were expertly blended and the courses melted into each other perfectly. There were meat and fish substitutes so exceptionally well crafted that I had to carefully examine them to convince myself they weren't the real thing.
The cuisine is Chinese and the set menu consisted of countless small courses which guarantee that if you don't like one dish you can simply wait for the next (although everything was irresistable to us) and you can be, for a change in Japan, really genuinely full by the end of the meal.
Ruru accepts credit cards, the service was absolutely wonderful, the decor was stylish and relaxing and, as I said before, the food was absolutely heavenly.
I'm writing this review because I really want people to go there; when we visited on a Friday night it was empty apart from us, it would be an utter tragedy if this restaurant shut due to lack of interest. I cannot recommend Ruru highly enough. Make the effort and see for yourself, Ruru is well worth the visit!
Pros: Incredible food * Incredibly friendly service * Very chic and stylish
Cons: Out of the way * No English menu * Quiet |
