Review: Had lunch here served by very friendly staff. Easy atmosphere and no pretensions- a veg version of a greasy spoon. Plenty of vegan choices on offer plus some vegan cakes. Good value.

Review: Me and my mate called in here on our way to an FC united game. The food was ace and worth the money. Good music on the jukebox makes for a good atmosphere and the chairs were VERY relaxing. None of overly cool unfriendliness you often find in big city cafes.
Recommend the all day breakfast, just what you need set you up for the footy : ) Defo, go again next time I'm in Manchester!
Pros: Food * Friendly * Cost
Cons: 30p charge for soya milk * * |

Review: I had the pleasure of going to this establishment for the first time on Saturday. I was made to feel very welcome by a guy called Martin who runs the joint and also the girl who was working with him. I asked what was vegan vegetarian to which a list of suitable delicacies was rattled off. I plumped for the curry and it had a pleasantly rounded flavour rather than tasting like Chernobyl fall out.
Centrally located and reasonably priced. A shame it's not open longer hours.
Pros: Vegan veggie friendly * Central * Friendly staff
Cons: Closed evenings * * |

Review: Set in the cool Northern Quarter of Manchester this place is a retro paradise. Based on the ground floor of a shop selling throwback funky gear the cafe is a little gem. OK, the food aint gourmet but who cares, it's snacks galore with a few main meals chucked in. Vegan sausage toasties and bacon butties are the order of the day here served with a smile and a bit of Manchester charm. Decent prices and plenty of drinks to choose from. For some reason though, they charge 30p extra for soya milk even though the majority of food here is vegan anyway. Fact: the local vegan group meet here on the last Saturday of the month. A cool place with decent British fayre
Pros: cheap snacks * vimto cordial * cool surroundings
Cons: charge for soya milk * * |

Review: As a vegan it's nice to have so many choices and with the very recent introduction of Sunday lunch this choice has expanded. As opposed to having "vegan options" Mod Pop Cafe gives vegans serious consideration and a large proportion of the menu is vegan.
The place is full of character and the owners both work there which is increasingly rare in city centre establishments these days.
Portions are generous and prices reasonable and I doubt anyone leaves still hungry.
The atmosphere is great and quirky which I like and everyone is made to feel very welcome and that their custom is valued. It's a great change from the usual faceless, corporate establishments.
I will certainly coninue to be a regular visitor here along with my friends.
Pros: Friendly * Good value * Loads of choice
Cons: * * |

Review: I live near this place and pop in a lot on Sundays. There was a change of ownership a year or so back, so if you went in longer ago than that and were disappointed, try it again, the menu has changed a lot. Basically, this is the place for undemanding try-ups, bangers and mash (a snip at under £4), butties, chilli, and pasta with fake meat. You won't get salads and freshly-squeezed juices here - go to the Earth Cafe if you want really healthy grub.
Pros: Vegan sosage heaven * Lots of savoury vegan options * Mostly great value
Cons: They charge extra for soya milk * No vegan cakes (sob) * |

Review: I am always wary of a cafe that pays too much attention to it's facade. Mod Pop has the most attitude of all the vintage boutiques on Manchester's wonderful Oldham Street. But the clothing range is more like a primary-coloured production-line array of pick-your-size. So it was hard to shop up an appetite after 5 minutes of browsing (at least for a guy - women will have much more fun), except that the shelf labels made me grateful for a reasonably-priced menu.
Downstairs the cafe continues the 60's/70's theme, but I couldn't help feeling the atmosphere was painted on. Granted, this is a bit unfair - after all it IS a retro boutique. But for authenticity I expect Mrs Cleaver to serve me a plate of mash, and cordial in one of the floral jugs sitting expensive and unloved on the wall. The staff are friendly for sure, there was plenty of room to sit and the music was cool and unobtrusive.
But what about the food? Well, the standing menu is basic and sufficient (bangers and mash; mixed bean chilli; veggie burger; soup; ciabattas; breakfast range), including the "Double Brunchfast" which seems enticing (if only liguistically) if not creative... It is a double serve veggie breakfast. There is a full range of coffees, teas, juices and smoothies. Soy is available.
Possessed by the festive spirt I ordered the "Chunky Christmas Ciabatta" from the specials board. A bit diappointing, it was basically a toasted ciabatta stuffed with fake meat and cranberry sauce. No nutritional value, just a take-away snack on a plate. A little salad goes a long way, team! Especially if it's a sit-down affair.
As for the coffee, it was no worse than the usual weak thin soy latte the English provide to us Antipodean coffee snobs.
Desserts are not vegan.
Overall, I was not entirely fulfilled, but you could do a lot worse and a lot pricier. I want someone to review the breakfast set, it looks promising...
Pros: friendly service * design *
Cons: quantity * nutrition * |
