Review: I went to The Q on a weeknight with some friends, we were just looking to unwind after work. We had seen the previous reviews, and wanted to give the establishment the benefit of the doubt before writing it off.
We happened to be there on a night where the owner, Emily was working. We asked about the status of vegan products at The Q, and she discussed the topic openly with us. Her previous baker was not certified to be baking for a commercial establishment, and was trying to sell her baked goods that were unfit to be sold. While I like my baked goods dairy-free, I don't want to eat some strangers hair! She mentioned that there are no vegan bakeries in Worcester that could provide a steady flow of baked goods for a reasonable price. I suppose it all comes down to the bottom line. In the meantime she bakes vegan regularly for the cafe, while buying some (not vegan) baked goods.
She also told us to ask when we came in because while she baked exclusively vegan, she doesn't advertise the products as vegan because non-vegan people tend to shy away from vegan pastries.
When she doesn't mention it, they can't get enough of them. (Which we all laughed about)
She told us she maintains a few vegan options for sandwiches, but that there just isn't a demand for vegan sandwiches and she was wasting more food than she was selling. She mentioned needing to be "fiscally responsible in tumultuous economic times". I can dig it. She now keeps frozen veggie patties and things like homemade hummus and guacamole for vegan protein. She called them her "Old Faithfuls".
My friends and I all had some vegan strawberry, or cherry pie and some tasty soy lattes. Everything was delicious. The atmosphere was cozy, there was a group of people that were kind of loud, but in a way you would expect. They were talking politics or something.
All in all, it was a delightful experience. I'll be going back, I'm glad I gave it a chance.
Pros: Great desserts * Delicious Lattes * Excellent Service
Cons: Limited dinner options * none * none |

Review: I too am rather disapointed with the recent trends at the Q. I have been going there for the past year, mostly for takeout coffee and vegan munchies, less often for music and poetry. However I do tend to agree with the prior review. The food choices have dwindeled to none, as I was told upon my last visit, the vegan cupcake woman is no longer selling to Q (the Q owner's choice, reportetly). And there have been little or no vegan sandwich options for quite some time. Now I understand that providing vegan food choices in Worcester may not be supported by local social and economic factors, and therefore may not be in the owner's future plans for her business. But, with all the other hardships facing a coffee house, it seems that writing off a small but dedicated group of customers is not in the best interest of the long term success of Q.
Also, I agree partially with the assesment of the staff and clientel of Q, while the attitude of the usual crowd is out of the control of the owner, the staff is not. Perhaps something could be done to make the staff more welcoming to less frequent and casual customers.
I'll give them another chance or two, but if things don't improve, I'll be baking my vegan cupcakes at home and getting my soy lattes elsewhere.
Pros: Good coffee * poetry jam * good music
Cons: Little or no vegan food * Little or no vegan food * Little or no vegan food |

Review: I thought The Q was great at first, and since it was pretty new I went out of my way to support this up-and-coming business. I do like their drinks. And they roast their own coffee right there, which I think is really cool! The vegan cupcakes were always delicious when they had them. And I liked being able to go to a cafe that didn't close so early at night. (I believe they are open until 2 am some days.)
Lately it seems to have been getting progressively worse. The dessert cases are usually bare or have only a couple dairy, non-vegan items. They are often out of sandwich ingredients, but then again I didn't usually buy them because they are a bit pricey.
And, though unrelated to the food or drink, the atmosphere is extremely clique-y. There are chairs and couches outside where the same people always congregate and stare at everyone who walks in. People sitting inside will talk very loudly together or even yell across the room to each other. This place seems to cater mostly to lame, awkward hacker geeks who do not know how to be friendly or polite, so maybe if that fits you, The Q is the place to go.
And I guess they aren't allowed to do shows anymore because they got busted for not having the proper license? I'm not sure about the details. Maybe it was partly due to people hanging around outside talking loudly. I think they've had problems with that before. Also, I heard something about one of the managers doing some shady dealings while on the clock there. I think that's too bad. I was really hoping The Q would be a great hangout spot, but unfortunately I don't have a desire to go there anymore.
Pros: drinks are great! * roast their own coffee * reasonably priced drinks
Cons: poorly stocked * poor management * very clique-y |

Review: A few friends and I recently went out for dinner at the Buddah Hut, and afterwards wanted to hang out together for a bit longer before going home. I had heard of The Q online, and decided that since we were already nearby, we might as well check them out.
The atmosphere was very laied back and welcoming, with sofas, board games, and other things which just seemed to say "sit down and stay a while". There was even a musician who came in at one point to play a little gig.
As far as the actual food, the dessert selections were a little bit limited, but they were getting another shipment of desserts in the next day. Apparently they normally have a pretty wide selection (the woman running the counter mentione somthing about them usually having vegan pomegranite cupcakes, which I'm hoping to try sometime), but the few choices that they had then were still wonderful; plus, I'm not complaining at all, most cafes that offer vegan desserts will just have one or two options, whereas The Q, despite running low on sweets at that point, still had more options than that. There were a few types of cookies and cupcakes available; all of them were organic, vegan, fair trade, and totally delicious. All I can say about their sweets are that they were perfect.
Their prices are very good as well. You can get a cookie and a cup of tea for under $2, which is pretty fantastic. Their espressos and such are a tad more expensive, but still very reasonable.
Pros: Lots of Options * Inexpensive and Yummy * Wonderful Atmosphere
Cons: none * none * none |

Review: I was actually driving around Worcester lost for over an hour and happened to stumble upon this joint. I did recall hearing about it online and figured I'd stop rather than driving all over creation for another hour.
They've got a decent little selection of sandwiches, which you can veganize. They also sell local fair-trade, organic coffee. Apparently they carry all vegan desserts, but to my dismay their delivery had not yet arrived that day. Maybe next time. I was hoping for a bit more to choose from, but overall this is a cozy little place.
Pros: cozy atmosphere * vegan-friendly * vegan desserts!
Cons: x * x * x |
