Review: I had the power burger-veggie burger. It was so moist and flavorful. I absolutely devoured it. The coffee is all french press and absolutely wonderful. The staff is fun and friendly, you feel like you can relax and hang out. I have also met folks there for dessert and we all loved everything we had. I enjoyed every last morsel of the lemon/coconut cake I ordered. I have been thee on several different occasions and found the food and the atmosphere incredible.

Pros: excellent food * excellent coffee * very friendly fun atmosphere

Review: I really, really wanted to love Sugar Pearl. I've eaten there four times (two at the restaurant, two for delivery). The LGBTQ business advocates/programs for the arts, feminism, and community development - which is really enlightening in a neighborhood considerably far from the hipper Westcott/University areas.

However, my experiences with Sugar Pearl have ranged from mediocre to downright upsetting. At best, the food is good but not stellar, basically on par with anything that I could make myself at home. They also always seem to be out of a ton of ingredients. I've ordered the vegan white bean wrap three times, and each time they've had to sub black beans. I'm beginning to suspect that they've stopped ordering white beans at all. My boyfriend has had similar experiences here with missing menu items.

Also, while they have smoothies, their only vegan "smoothie" option is basically just almond butter, bulghur, and olive oil. They say that it contains fruit, but the totally dominating taste for me was the olive oil. Slurping olive oil through a straw is just a little weird, and definitely not what I was hoping for when I came in looking for refreshing drink. Some soy yogurt or ice cream might be a more advisable menu addition.

However, I've kept trying to give them more chances (especially since they deliver!), but today really turned me off for good. While munching on my vegan chop-chop hash, I bit down on a pretty sizable shard of glass. It was at least a half an inch long and maybe as wide as my thumb.

Glass in the food, uninspired cooking, and disappointing availability....sorry, Sugar Pearl, I just can't let you break my heart anymore :-( There are much better vegan/veg options elsewhere in the city.

Pros: coffee * activism * friendly staff
Cons: glass in the food! * everything just tastes meh * missing ingredients

• I took a sip of the smoothie you mentioned because my friend had gotten it once. We both agreed that it was beyond horrible. Exactly like you described..like drinking straight up olive oil threw a straw. Disgusting. The glass situation is horrific.. response by lostgirl12

Review: The food here is delicious--I've had several of the sandwiches and wraps--the tofu wrap is my FAVORITE). (The salads aren't so good--mostly just a pile of okay lettuce with not much else, but this does in no way impair the goodness of the rest of the food. I'm not a coffee drinker so I can't speak to that. What makes this place awesome is that it is really trying to do something great in Syracuse.
HOWEVER, I was told that all desserts are vegan and homemade which would be incredible and I believed this until I saw a girl making BETTY CROCKER BOX BROWNIES WITH EGGS (the place is small and some of the cooking is done visibly). Not okay in my book.

Review: I loved this place when I first went. Friendly people, great decor and feel. Interesting and yummy menu. However, I have been there 4 times. Each time, they were out of many of the day's menu items. On Mother's Day, my husband called ahead that morning to check on their Mother's Day menu and serving times. He took me there, when we arrived, they we out of all items except for one on the menu which they were substituing ingredients for. We traveled 35 minutes and it was my Mother's Day gift which was mentioned. They were not accommodating at all. Didn't offer to prepare something else, etc. We were so disappointed.
We left. I ended up cooking my own Mother's Day meal.
I gave it another try with 3 friends. Again, many items not available and/or not consistent with menu description which was not mentioned until we were ready to place our order.

I hope that more attention will be put on creating an enjoyable and satisfying experience for all customers. After all, that is why one goes out to a restaurant.

Pros: great menu * nice people * unique decor
Cons: accommodating * consistency *

• Unfortunetly I had a similar experience as well. The first time I went it was great, the second time (around thanksgiving) they were not only out of many food menu items but drink menu items as well. I took a friend after bragging to her about how amazing the food/beverages are but ended up being really disappointed that they were out of so many things.. response by lostgirl12

Review: After reading some good reviews on this place I decided to give it a shot and I was not disappointed at all! The atmosphere and decor were very cool, the staff was amazingly friendly, and the food was delicious. I visited during lunch hours so I missed the breakfast but I can't wait to go back to try some pumpkin pancakes and tofu scramble! Definetly check out this place if you are in the area.

Pros: excellent food * awesome staff * nice atmosphere
Cons: a little chilly inside * *

Review: Sugar Pearl is a unique and wonderful addition to Syracuse. The first thing that will catch your eye is it's contemporary decor. You'll almost forget you're in Syracuse! Local artists' work is displayed on the walls and the furniture is modern-minimalist chic.

The coffee is by far the best in town. Sugar Pearl uses Gimme! coffee out of Ithaca, NY. There is no drip coffee...it's all french press! This is any coffee connoiseur's paradise. They also carry soy creamer, which is an unusal surprise for the vegan crowd.

All of the food items I've had - breakfast, dinner and treats - have been wonderful. Almost everything on the menu is vegan and there are many options. Breakfast has to be my favorite. I recommend the pumpkin-zucchini pancakes. So good!

The place is also LGBT friendly and it's an all around comfortable environment for anyone. It has become one of my favorite spots to spend endless hours studying. There's also a pool table...and hopefully, this joint will also get its liquor licence and become a bar at night. The owner and the staff are all super friendly.

Review: A friend and I recently discovered Sugar Pearl and were very impressed with both the imaginative menu and the quality of the food. Although neither of us are strict vegetarians, we appreciated the superior rendering of such healthy food! This little place will have a major impact on Syracuse's restaurant scene as more people discover all it has to offer. The atmosphere is at once urban and welcoming.

Review: Last night my hubby and I, not wanting to go home after a hockey game, decided to try the new vegan coffee lounge I read about.. sugar pearl. My hubby had a hot chocolate while I, on the path of a raw foodist, had the raw smoothie which was devine. My hubby said his hot chocolate was great too. It was quiet and we started chatting with the owner who is super nice and looked over the menu which looked amazing.. pumpkin pancakes anyone? She also told me they were working on a raw menu for the future which makes me extremely happy! There's nothing in Syracuse for us raw foodists. I would definitely recommend this joint and will be a regular from now on.. if you see me say hi! There is a pool table and a jukebox so I can imagine people spending a lot of time here. It's a great place and I hope it sticks around for a long time.

Pros: raw friendly * great atmosphere * food sounded awesome
