Review: Sadly, after closing down their Tokyo shops, the Maman in Osaka is also now gone....
However, I did hear that they will open again a new location. I'll be sure to update the address if/when that happens!

Review: Food ranges from very good to incredibly stupendous. I'm usually surprised and amazed by how good it is. And the deserts are even better. You can get a lunch set in the neighborhood of 1300 yen. Dinner is more expensive, about 1600 yen for an entree and more like 4000 yen for a fancy full-course meal. Sweets maybe 500 yen each. But it's worth it. Everything is vegan except that they have a seafood of the day option at dinner. You can also get sweets, soup, and sandwiches to go if they are not sold out. And there is a little store on the first floor with natural foods. New lunch menu every two weeks, sweets selection changes with the season.
Pros: Astoundingly Delicious * Vegan Cakes * Fancy
Cons: Not so cheap * * |

Review: We tried finding Maman Tce before, but had no luck, then we actually stumbled upon it by accident. Take Exit 6 Shinsaibashi station, turn right and go straight. Turn left at the intersection with SWATCH shop. Go straight and take the next right down a small side street - look for a small red sign saying Maman Terrace in English.
We had a lovely meal, and enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere and friendly staff.
One thing to be wary of: by Osaka standards it is very expensive for dinner. Although the food was of a very high standard, its cheaper counterpart would cost a quarter of the price in a Japanese restaurant, perhaps for double the quantity. However, it really was delicious and I feel a bit bad comparing it to a regular Japanese Izakaya, but needed to mention it just the same.
At dinner time I would recommend Maman Tce to a couple, or a small group of friends who wanted to splash out a little and have a cosy dinner together. Be prepared to spend and try the special set menu, where you get an entre, soup, rice, two mains (which are pretty small), some dessert and a drink for about US$4500yen per person.
We went back for Lunch, and it is much cheaper, with a set plate, or set meal for approx 1000yen, or 1400yen for the upgrade of drink and dessert. It was great!
Oh, and book in advance - it was full of reserved tables when we went. Even if you go in and book a table for a bit later (Shinsaibashi is a great area to wander around in anyway).
Pros: excellent food * healthy * Japanese or Western style
Cons: hard to find for first timers * dinner is expensive * busy |

Review: If you're vegan and happen to be remotely near Osaka come for Maman. The staff is so nice! The cooks are great, too! The first review sums up the location well. I made reservations and ate there 3 days in a row :) Its very hip and usually has a classy crowd. I will never forget the flavors I experienced there but the stand out is the BEER! Both the light and dark Kamui beer is the best beer I've ever tasted in my life. (organic, too) If anyone has a clue how to get it to the states I'd love to know. If you are in Osaka and bored out of your mind and want to ship me some I'll gladly make it worth your while, lol.
Pros: KAMUI BEER * *

Review: this small, narrow but beautifully designed take-out, bar, and restaurant on the 3rd floor provides impeccable high-tech service(employees communicate with headsets because the kitchen is on the 2nd floor, the sweets are on the 1st floor and the restaurant on the 3rd...). Maman Terrace provides delicious, creative and impeccably executed dishes. Both taste and aesthetic are great. Furthermore, the selection is varied enough that I've been there 3 times and haven't quite grasped the extent of their cuisine. Lunch sets are an absolute surprise at only around 1200 yen for a really amazing platter with bowl of rice, soup, tea, 2-3 veggie dishes, 1 varied proteindish and the main. The second time I went for dinner and took the waiter's recommended 3500yen course. It was mindblowing. Every course stands on its own but the magic lies in the succession of each course, both in taste and aesthetic. I'm going on and on about this place because it's the best restaurant I've ever been to all things considered. Colourful simple modern decor, impeccable service (timing is key), tasty food, carefully presented food, macrobiotic food, amazing desserts, and extremely affordable for this kind of quality. May be difficult to find among the many streets of that outdoorishshopping area, but do persevere and you will find a true gem.
Pros: Beautiful tasty Food * Impeccable Service * Surprisingly Low Price
Cons: NOT for fancy fine dining event * may be difficult to find * |
