Respond to Review of Chia Shang
Review: My friend and I are both vegans and went to Chia Shang based on the reviews from this page, but the restaurant's food and service was absolutely not in sync with the other positive reviews posted (perhaps things have changed at Chia Shang during the past couple of years since those reviews were written). I don't think I've ever had a worse restaurant experience. The menu did not have descriptions as to what came with the meal, and our server, who was inattentive throughout, could not even tell us if the meal came with steamed/fried rice or vegetables, what kind of vegetables, etc. We asked what was vegan and her response (after going back and forth to the kitchen a number of times) was nebulous. We waited 15 minutes for spring rolls and another 30+ minutes after that for our food until we asked the owner to check on it and she came literally running out with our meals (they had obviously been ready and sitting there but not brought out to us by our server who was standing around doing nothing). They (and by they I mean not our server, who also did not check on us) brought us white rice instead of brown rice two times after that. I was hoping all of this would be alleviated by a great tasting meal, but that was far from what happened. My curried "chicken" had a disgusting taste far from that of curry, and the fake "chicken" was limp and much too soft with a nauseating texture unlike any other mock chicken I have tasted. My friend's sesame "chicken" came with five pieces of broccoli when it was supposed to have assorted vegetables with extra broccoli. Her "chicken," despite being the same as mine, was much more firm than mine was, which did not make sense since they were supposed to be the same. After I took a bite of hers and actually spit it out because it tasted and felt so strange, we seriously questioned whether or not we were eating real meat. By that point, we were both so disgusted and concerned for the legitimacy of their "vegan" options that we stopped eating with barely anything gone from our plates and a $32 dollar bill for two truly disgusting meals. If you are a vegetarian or vegan I would strongly recommend that you do NOT go to Chia Shang as there are much better restaurants around Ann Arbor with much better service and vegan options that will not make you question if you are actually eating meat nor leave you nauseous for hours. You're better off heading to Earthen Jar or Seva.
