Respond to Review of 222 Veggie Vegan
Review: Firstly, it's pretty close to two tube stations (West Kensington or West Brompton), between 5 and 10 minutes walk. We visited on a Saturday evening in July 2012. The staff were all friendly and attentive (but never overbearing), and it felt what I'd call "semi-posh" - by this I mean it has nice decor and ambience with classy music, but a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Best of both worlds! We found it to be solidly yet subtly vegan - there's no evangelism, it's carnivore-friendly so take your meat-eating friends there to open their eyes! (I didn't see any "alternative lifestyle leaflets" as one recent reviewer mentioned.) There was a good range of food and drinks (both alcohol and soft) on the menu. We had a "Kicking Cola" which is an organic cola - great taste and refreshing - and a (bottled) Cherry & Apple Juice which was tangy and tasty. We shared the Bean and Tofu Pancake to start, and it was incredible from the first bite! The tomato sauce was full of flavour and just the right side of spicy, and the vegan cream was incredibly creamy. The pancake was in that wonderful zone between chewy and crispy, and the filling was hearty and plentiful. The whole dish worked very well. For the main course we had one Seitan Stroganof (deliciously creamy and decent portions of rice and stroganof, with great strips of seitan) and one Oyster Mushroom & Spinach Raclette (the whole dish was superb, with a rich creamy sauce, and excellent mushrooms). Both mains came with a small but well-presented side salad. By now we were very full, but we wanted to see if the desserts were as good as the starter and mains! A 222 Pancake (ice cream in pancake topped with warm vanilla and chocolate sauce) finished us off nicely, along with two good fair trade coffees. Even though we were in there after the official closing time by now, the staff were happy for us to take our time, as they were setting up the buffet for the next day's lunchtime - we didn't feel rushed at all. All the food was very well presented. It's amazing that all this is vegan! We've been eating vegan food for a year or two now, and we were still impressed by the range and quality at 222. The delicious creamy sauces were cashew-based, though didn't taste of cashews. It really was a perfect meal. I can't think of anything they could have changed to make it better. The evening dinner prices were "moderate" rather than "inexpensive" - but still good for the quality and portions.
