Respond to Review of Jing Lian Ju
Review: We were hoping this place would be just a little nicer since it is affiliated with a temple and where we live (Japan) that implies a totally different culinary standard to what we experienced here. It is not terrible by any means, just not great either. The food was very oily, despite our request that they use the bare minimum. They also probably use MSG, since our request to hold it resulted in a note on the order (we think they did adhere to this one). Service was friendly enough (no English, but that's nothing new in China) and the family who runs it are all vegetarian, which is always nice to know (they actually looked like they may be from a much more remote area of China, but when we asked them in our broken Chinese where they were from they pointed to the ground, which we can only presume means they are local.. still puzzled us though!). It should be easy enough to find - it's near the lake, right across the road from the really imposing multi-level pagoda that shines like a mid city shopping mall at night. My husband used their bathroom and found the standard of hygiene to be a bit worrying. Neither us of felt sick afterwards though, other than from oil overload. The only memorable dish we ate here (and the only one we enjoyed enough to want to take home the left-overs) was a dessert, although we didn't know it was a dessert until we ordered it. Look for a dish that involves glutinous rice balls floating in fermented rice wine (which if you are familiar with Japanese cuisine was essentially like amazake). Not too sweet and perfect natural snack. Other than that, well.. if you're hungry I'm sure it will beat eating meat, but that is about all.
