Review: Izba is a veggie oasis in the Dorgogne, which is otherwise a desert for vegans and lacto-vegetarians. After spending five days traversing the Dordogne eating nothing but salads, bread, and the occasional cheese-free pizza, it was a heartwarming delight to be greeted upon entering Izba with the question, "Are you vegetarian or vegan?" It gets better: Izba uses all organic ingredients, mostly local, and they make everything from scratch. Even their seitan is homemade. The wholesome and inventive food takes influences from across Europe and further afield. (Note: It seems the menu changes periodically, so what you see on the website may or may not reflect what's currently being served.) There were vegan options for all courses: appetizers, main dishes, and desserts. The zucchini galette with mushrooms was particularly scrumptious, and the strawberry with oat-milk pudding dessert was heavenly. Given the high quality of the food, it's rather impressive that they're able to keep the prices so low - starting around 8 euros for a set meal. The owner is a warm, friendly gentleman who speaks English (as well as French, of course) and clearly cares about his guests and wants them to be happy. All in all, a very pleasant experience worth the drive from the southern Dordogne. And, while you're in PĂ©rigueux, don't miss the chance to take a walk around the pedestrian-only historic center of the town, with its massive Byzantine cathedral and charming cobblestone streets - all just a few blocks from Izba.
