Respond to Review of Portobello Vegan Trattoria
Review: Over a visit to the Pacific Northwest my wife and I ate here twice. The first time because of it's reputation as one of the - if not *the* - premier vegan restaurants in Portland. Our return visit was a few days later once we were back in Portland because we needed more of their Gnocchi! The menu here is ever-changing - from entrees, to desserts to wines. The ambiance is top-notch, very haute-cuisine without being too pretentious or fancy. The gnocchi is absolutely fantastic. Unless you're starving, the half order winds up being adequately filling while leaving room for dessert. I've tried their vegan "chocolate bomb" and was very impressed. The risotto I had my first time there, however, was a little basic without much to write home about. Still, I got what I ordered. I did see another review in here which mentioned that the pairing veggies were bland and 'soaked in oil.' This might be their chef's one point of weakness - while a mastery of inventive dishes is without question, the simple elements accompanying them may sometimes be overlooked. This semi-criticism, still, does not take much away from this excellent restaurant. The service can be a tad slow and reservations are highly recommended; we saw many couples turned away as space was very limited on weekends and weeknights, both. The price may be somewhat steeper than you're used to but a half order of their amazing gnocchi and a glass of their cheapest ( yet always satisfying - wine actually seemed like a good deal to me. Give this place a definite try, make a reservation in advance and order whatever sounds best - they do a great job.
