Respond to Review of New Age Veggie - Huaihai Zhong
Review: This place is much better than what some of the reviews here would have you believe. We were pleasantly surprised and ended up here several times during our stay in Shanghai. First off, they don't use MSG - that's one step in the right direction. They do sometimes use too much oil - this can be regulated somewhat by asking them not to, although it's pot luck as to how much you actually end up with. The beauty of New Age though is the sheer variety of dishes on offer. We don't eat much mock meat and had no trouble getting a good range of dishes together, not once, but every time we ate here. Some of their mock meats are actually handmade too which means they are not factory food so it pays to ask (try flashing the words 自制的素肉 at them and see what they suggest). They make the best vege mabo tofu (grandma's tofu) in town, without a doubt and their toucho mien (hand-cut fried noodles) are fabulous too, although on a bad day they can be too oily. Vegans beware - there were some very random looking Western menu items. Definitely best to stick to the Chinese menu. Oh yes and do try the Chinese desserts - sweet as all hell but very yummy all the same. The decor is a bit questionable in taste - feels more like a cabaret bar than a vege restaurant but it is nonetheless comfortable and clean. Definitely better for dinner than lunch, when it could all feel just a bit too much.
