Review: I dined at Bolhoed on my one night in Amsterdam earlier this month. Based on some of the standout reviews from dedicated members I decided to try it for myself and throw my two cents into the discussion. Service is slow. Call it European, call it whatever. It's slow, but everyone here was friendly and it's not too hard to look past it unless you are dining in a rush. My sincere advice: don't eat here unless you have the time to bask in its charms and delights. The menu is limited but there is absolutely something for everyone - vegans included. The menu mentions how most ingredients are organic, which I hold in high regard. I ordered the "African" titled meal, featuring a tofu filo pastry, couscous and a hearty salad. The tofu filo was very good, likewise the couscous and the salad, while very fresh, a bit too one-sided with beets dominating colour and taste. Portion size was extremely large and, as a result, I just did not have the appetite for anything from their desert fridge which glows with a divine fluorescent light, inviting any and all to gawk at how amazing everything in there looks. I will have to go back for desert sometime. I was purposely waiting to see both how long it would take the get the bill after the server had cleared my plate, while, in the meantime, hoping I would quickly digest my entree, making room in my stomach for some sweets. Alas, the meal was just too filling! Be aware that the service, while friendly, is not particularly attentive. Despite this, it is a great place to hang out, enjoy interesting, unique decor and a really lovely, affectionate cat.
