Respond to Review of Il Margutta RistorArte
Review: I went to Il Margutta a number of times on my trip to Rome. I won't lie, the food was great. For lunch, they serve a buffet with a lot of vegan options. I found that the lunchtime staff was very friendly, and the chef would even come out to tell you which items were vegan. It was pre-prepared, of course, but very delicious. They even made us the vegan chocolate cake, which was not on the buffet, because the dessert of the day was not vegan. For dinner, the food was exceptional. They had a spicy linguine with mushrooms that is probably the best vegan pasta dish I have ever tasted. Their seitan entree and spinach appetizer were also incredibly good. A second vegan dessert, the soy panna cotta, was not so good. Strangely lumpy and bland. The restaurant is a bit expensive. I guess that is ok, considering where it is and what it is like inside. But be prepared to dish out 40 Euros for a full dinner without drinks. The real downside at Il Margutta is the evening staff. I ate dinner here more than once, and each time was met with a lot of rudeness and snobbery from the head host and the waiters. One time I didn't order wine, which seemed really offensive to the staff. They had no problem insulting me and my wife over this topic in Italian right in front of us (I'm not even sure if they were unaware that we could understand what they were saying). We did like the food a lot, and tried to get along there. You would think the more often someone would show up for dinner, he/she would be treated better as a valuable customer, but each successive time we showed up, we were taken more for granted, treated more contemptuously, and eventually outright snubbed. Our last dinner there: we were snarled at upon arrival, we were basically seated in an out-of-the-way corner, insulted in Italian, and ignored during our meal.
