When visiting DC I spent a lot of time at the Smithsonian Institute. The museums with food options did offer a VERY limited vegetarian selection. The best choice--suggested by a vegetarian working at the Renwick Museum--was the cafeteria at the Museum of the American Indian. It is pricier, but has a large selection of high-quality food. There are many vegetarian options, all of which are clearly labelled as "vegetarian". There are also clearly-labelled gluten-free options. I chose not to list this restaurant due to the presence of meat, but wanted to provide the information for other travellers!
I had yucca stew with chayote, a dish with vegetables and cashews, blue cornbread, Indian pudding, and tapioca with guava puree. Delicious!

What a treat. The lady who owns the deli at the back of the grocery store is so nice to chat with and cooks great soul food!
