Start from Parque Juárez downtown and walk down Allende (you'll be going in a west-southwesterly direction). In less than ten minutes you'll encounter a tamal shop on your right. They make their masa with vegetable shortening and even sell a veggie tamal. (Sorry we don't have the name/address--hoping someone else will find the place, enjoy it, and add a listing.)

There is another vegetarian restaurant. Go down Hidalgo to arque Los Berros, follow Salvador Diaz Miron around the park past the school, there is a sign that reads, "Dr. Miguel Dorantes Medico Militar," on the red brick fence... then you will see a steel red door and a doorbell for the restaurant.
