Puerto Viejo is all about finding the flow, whether it be waves, music, hammocking or hiking. And it's no different when it comes to food. Many restaurants offer vegetarian options, and most respect eating preferences and habits: asking for food the way you want it is no problem and people are happy to alter dishes.
Loco natural, Jammin Juice and Jerk Joint, Chile Rojo and Tex Mex offer tempeh and tofu dishes, Veronica's serves up vegetarian fare only with soymeats, Bread and Chocolate and Caribeans offer vegetarian and vegan options in their desert and lunch menus - and all of them are great places to hang out, meet the locals and enjoy the flavor and atmosphere of the Caribbean.
The Saturday Farmers Market, 7am -10am, is a great place to find organic fruits and vegetables and fresh locally made tempeh and tofu, as well as delicious vegetarian and vegan treats.
Jardin La Isla Botanical Garden is another great place to find vegetarian and vegan treats as well as an incredible garden of fruits, spices and flowers set on a permaculture farm.
Enjoy your stay!

I have lived here for years. I have watched the vegan options in restaurants grow. I can eat excellent Italian, Caribbean, Middle Eastern, French, etc. And, they do not mind if you ask to leave ingredients, like cheese, out of items. Very easy place to be vegan!

Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is located in the South Caribbean of Costa Rica, just south of Limon. It is a reggae town offering various activities from relaxing and surfing at Salsa Brava beach to hiking through the forests at Manzanillo and Cahuita. Many restaurants offer Jamaican and Caribbean style down home cuisine that can be veggie friendly.
