Veggies Build Better Bones
Greater bone density is linked to a high intake of fruits and vegetables, according to a 2006 American Journal of Clinical Nutrition study that examined the bone mineral status and food intake of 212 adolescent boys and girls, 90 young women (aged 23 to 37 years) and 134 older men and women (aged 60-83 years). Those who ate the most fruits and vegetables had the best bone mineral content.

Fruits and vegetables allow the body to make more bone-forming vitamin D and help bones retain calcium. They are full of bone-building vitamins like A, B6, B12, folic acid, D, and K, as well as minerals like magnesium, boron, copper, phosphorus, and zinc.

Vegan Diet Reverses Diabetes Symptoms
Reuters, Washington
People who ate a low-fat vegan diet, cutting out all meat and dairy, lowered their blood sugar more and lost more weight than people on a standard American Diabetes Association diet, researchers said. They lowered their cholesterol more and ended up with better kidney function, according to the report published in Diabetes Care, a journal published by the American Diabetes Association.

"I hope this study will rekindle interest in using diet changes first, rather than prescription drugs," said Dr. Neal Barnard, president of the Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine, which helped conduct the study.

Barnard's team at George Washington University, the University of Toronto and the University of North Carolina tested 99 people with type-2 diabetes, assigning them randomly to either a low-fat, low-sugar vegan diet, or the standard American Diabetes Association diet. After 22 weeks on the diet, 43 percent of those on the vegan diet and 26 percent of those on the standard diet were either able to stop taking some of their drugs such as insulin or glucose-control medications, or lowered the doses. The vegan dieters lost 14 pounds (6.5 kg) on average while the diabetes association dieters lost 6.8 pounds (3.1 kg). An important level of glucose control called a1c fell by 1.23 points in the vegan group and by 0.38 in the group on the standard diet.

Goji Berries Health Benefits
Asian cultures have long regarded goji berries as a longevity and strength-building food and often add them to soups and teas. More than a rich source of antioxidant carotenoids (beta-carotene), goji berries have been found to be a highly nutritionally-rich fruit that contains 18 different amino acids and 21 trace minerals.

Eat Right and Your Kids are Likely to Follow
Los Angeles Times, May 2006
A study of 36,000 Minnesota, USA teens points to a correlation of fresh produce intake with academic performance. Teens who earned the higest grades generally were the ones who ate more fruit and vegetables. In addition, studies of children including those as young as 2 and teenagers consistently show that what parents eat can shape what their children consume.
